Despite a Supreme Court ruling that only partially conforms with the requests of a Bangladeshi student organization whose statewide movement descended into violence and claimed at least 139 lives, the protests will continue.
An anonymous spokesman for Students Against Discrimination told AFP on Sunday that “we won’t call off our protests until the government issues an order reflecting our demands.”
The country’s top court removed most of the government employment quotas earlier in the day, which had sparked student-led demonstrations in Bangladesh.
The sources indicate that the court’s Appellate Division reversed an earlier ruling that had reinstated the quotas and mandated that applicants receive 93% of government jobs based only on qualifications.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s administration abolished the quota system in 2018, but a lower court reinstated it last month, sparking demonstrations and an official crackdown.
At this point, it was uncertain how the ruling would be received by demonstrators.
