ISLAMABAD: Following days of talks, the two major parties reached an agreement on a power-sharing formula in which Shehbaz Sharif would be nominated for Prime Minister and Asif Ali Zardari would run for President.
The agreement was reached on Tuesday between the coordination committees of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), amidst allegations of extortion among the erstwhile coalition partners.
The deal between Bhutto Zardari’s PPP and three-time premier Nawaz Sharif’s PML-N brings an end to days of uncertainty and discussions following the hung national assembly elections on February 8.
The PPP’s chairperson announced the accord at a late-night press conference in the federal capital.the numbers required to establish a government, as well as the support of other smaller parties.
The PML-N holds the most seats with 79, while the PPP has 54. They, along with four other smaller parties, control a solid 336-seat majority in the legislature.
The delay in creating a government in the nation of 241 million has raised concerns, as Pakistan is dealing with an economic crisis characterized by poor growth and record inflation, as well as escalating militant violence, and requires a strong administration with the authority to make harsh decisions.
