President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif underlined the government’s goal to increase the country’s capability for disaster risk reduction and safeguard vulnerable groups of people on the twentieth anniversary of the tragic October 8, 2005 earthquake.
They praised the entire country for its brave and united recovery from the disastrous 2005 earthquake in their individual speeches on the occasion of National Resilience Day, which is marked today.
Pakistan observes October 8 every year as a memorial to the victims of the catastrophic 7.6-magnitude earthquake that killed over 87,000 people on the same day in 2005.
