West Bengal Voter List Controversy: Millions Removed Ahead of 2026 Elections

West Bengal Voter List Controversy: Millions Removed Ahead of 2026 Elections Mass Removal of Voters Sparks Political Tension A major political controversy has emerged in West Bengal as nearly nine million people have been removed from the voter list ahead of the 2026 state elections. Among those affected is Muhammad Daud Ali, a 65-year-old former army technician. He recently found that his name, along with his three children, had been removed from the electoral rolls. Despite having valid documents like a passport and service records, they were excluded. Only his wife remains registered as a voter. Millions Affected by Electoral Roll Revision The removals are part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) carried out by the Election Commission of India. This process aims to clean voter lists by removing duplicate and outdated entries. Out of the nine million removed voters, more than six million were marked as either deceased or absent. However, around 2.7 million cases are still under review. These cases will now go through tribunals for final decisions. West Bengal stands out because it is the only state where an extra layer of verification has been added after the initial revision process. Political Clash Between Government and Election Body The issue has triggered a strong political reaction. The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) has openly challenged the election authority. The party claims that the process may unfairly target certain groups. On the other hand, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has defended the move. He stated that the goal is to ensure a fair and accurate voter list, with no eligible voter excluded. Migration Debate Adds Fuel to the Crisis The controversy has intensified due to political statements, including remarks by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Some leaders have suggested that the revision is meant to identify illegal migrants, especially from Bangladesh. This has raised concerns, as critics argue that such language may target Muslim communities. However, reports indicate that many Hindu voters have also been removed from the rolls. West Bengal shares a long and porous border with Bangladesh. This has made migration a sensitive and ongoing political issue in the region. Impact on Minority Population The state has one of the largest Muslim populations in India. According to past census data, Muslims make up a significant portion of the population in West Bengal. This has further increased concerns about fairness and representation in the electoral process. Upcoming Elections Under Scrutiny With elections scheduled later this month, the voter list controversy has become a key issue. Political parties continue to campaign, but questions remain about the transparency and fairness of the revision process.

Diesel is a major component of the freight industry, which relies heavily on it to operate long distance transport. Transport operators report that their expenses have increased dramatically since the tensions surrounding the Iran conflict drove global oil prices higher. The impact on businesses who rely heavily on heavy vehicles has been intense and immediate. The Government urges the public to reduce fuel consumption In a rare television message, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese spoke to the nation. He recognized the insecurity and asked that citizens limit their fuel consumption where they could. He encouraged the public to take advantage of public transportation so as to ensure that there is fuel available for industries and services that are essential but cannot do without driving. Truck operators struggle to stay afloat The message is not a comfort to many people in the transportation sector. Businesses are finding it difficult to keep up with rising costs. A driver explained that in order to remain afloat, he spends a lot of time on his finances. He tracks his income, tyres and fuel costs. Filling up a tank on a truck used to cost about A$3,600. The same tank filling costs around A$7.500. The sharp rise in operating costs has reduced profits and doubled the cost of doing business. Long routes add more pressure Companies that operate in remote locations face greater challenges. Some trucks cross the Nullarbor plain, an isolated and vast stretch of land. The route connects Ceduna with Norseman. There are few fuel stations and long distances between them. Some drivers are forced to travel 200km without fuel in some regions. Fuel planning is critical in these conditions. Fuel planning is critical in these conditions. Industry stability threatened by rising costs Diesel prices are continuing to rise, putting pressure on transport. Now, many businesses wonder how much longer they will be able to continue in this environment. If fuel prices are not stable, there may be delays or closures of freight companies.
