Previous Article Israel Lebanon Conflict Escalates as Strikes Intensify and Talks Approach Escalation of Violence in Southern Lebanon and Northern Israel Israeli air strikes and Hezbollah rocket fire increased over the weekend across southern Lebanon and northern Israel. Both sides signaled that fighting would continue despite growing diplomatic activity. The conflict has expanded since early March after renewed clashes between Israel and Hezbollah. Israel says its military campaign targets Hezbollah positions in Lebanon. Hezbollah continues rocket attacks toward northern Israel in response. Rising Civilian and Military Casualties Lebanese health authorities report that Israeli strikes have killed 2055 people in Lebanon since fighting resumed on 2 March. They also say 167 people died since Friday. Israel reports that Hezbollah attacks have killed 12 soldiers and 2 civilians during the same period. Among recent civilian victims was a child, around two years old. She survived an earlier strike on her home in southern Lebanon. She later died when another strike hit during her father’s funeral. Her seven year old sister suffered severe burns and remains in hospital. A Red Cross rescuer also died during weekend operations. The organization says a drone strike hit its team while they carried out a humanitarian mission. The Israeli military has not confirmed this claim. Diplomatic Efforts and Upcoming Talks Officials from Lebanon, Israel, and the United States plan to meet in Washington on Tuesday. Lebanese officials say the talks aim to set conditions for a ceasefire. If progress is made, formal negotiations may follow. Lebanon continues to push for an end to the war and a full Israeli withdrawal from its territory. Israel, however, states it will not negotiate a ceasefire with Hezbollah under current conditions. Statements from Political Leaders Lebanon’s prime minister said diplomatic efforts continue despite heavy fighting. He emphasized ongoing negotiations aimed at stopping the war. Israel’s prime minister maintained a firm position while visiting troops in southern Lebanon. He said Israeli forces would continue operations in what he described as a security zone. Israel says this zone extends up to ten kilometers inside Lebanese territory to prevent attacks on Israeli communities. Disputed Military Claims Israeli forces claim they killed more than 20 Hezbollah fighters operating from a hospital area in Bint Jbeil. Lebanese authorities deny this and accuse Israel of striking civilians and medical facilities. Heavy air strikes were also reported in multiple towns in southern Lebanon, including areas that saw major fighting during earlier conflicts between Israel and Hezbollah. Next Article French cement company found guilty of paying armed groups in Syria A court finds that illegal payments are linked to Syria-related operations The Paris Court ruled French cement firm Lafarge funded armed groups, such as Islamic State in Syria, to maintain its cement factory's operation during the civil conflict. The judges said that the company had paid out millions of dollars in protection funds between 2013 and 2014. Total cost was approximately 6.5 millions dollars. It was a goal to continue business at the northern Syria location as conflict escalated. Eight former employees were also found guilty of financing terrorism by the court. Former chief executive Bruno Lafont was sentenced to six years in prison. The payment method Lafarge employees arranged payment to several armed groups that controlled territory near the plant, according to investigators. Included in these payments were funds to ensure safe passage, access to raw material and for the payment of fees. A portion of the money used was to purchase raw materials from regions controlled by Islamic State. The judges said that the agreement effectively established a working relation with organisations proscribed. Judges condemn corporate decisions The judge Isabelle Prevost Desprez stated that the payments allowed armed groups to strengthen their control of resources. This allowed the groups to finance attacks in Europe and Middle East. Court ruled the financial survival of the factory drove company decisions. The judges said that economic interests came first before ethical and legal limits. Defense arguments are rejected Former executives claimed that the continued operation of local operations protected workers. Former executives said that leaving the site would have placed workers at risk. This justification was not accepted by the court. The court ruled the payments supported terrorist activities. Wider legal consequences Cement plant Jalabiya, purchased in 2008, began operating in 2010 - shortly before the Syrian war began. Holcim now owns the company. The company was fined over one million Euros. Separate investigations into crimes against humanity are still underway. It is the first time in France that a company was convicted of financing terrorism. French cement company found guilty of paying armed groups in Syria
