Vikram-1 took off from the Indian Space Research Organisation's launch facility in Sriharikota on Saturday What if launching a satellite was as easy as calling a cab? That's the vision behind an Indian private rocket company that achieved its first orbital launch on Saturday. Skyroot Aerospace, which recently became India's first space tech unicorn after reaching $1.1bn valuation, launched Vikram-1 from the Indian Space Research Organisation's (Isro) launch facility in Sriharikota in southern India. The seven-storey rocket lifted off at 12:05 India time [06:35 GMT] and travelled 280 miles (450km) to reach the Low Earth Orbit in a 16-minute flight. Skyroot is the first Indian private company to launch a rocket into orbit, making India only the third country, after the US and China, with a private company capable of orbital launches. "Vikram-1 Test Flight-1 has reached orbit... History is made," the company posted on X. The successful Vikram-1 launch will take Skyroot closer to its goal of offering what it calls a "cab service to space", where companies can hire a rocket "to ride to a unique location in the orbit to place a satellite or visit a space station". Skyroot Aerospace Skyroot Aerospace's Vikram-1 rocket inside the company's Infinity Campus in Hyderabad, IndiaSkyroot Aerospace The rocket was named after Vikram Sarabhai, regarded as the father of India's space programme The rocket - named after Vikram Sarabhai, who is called the father of India's space programme - is small and has the capacity to carry payloads of up to 350kg, Skyroot co-founder and CEO Pawan Kumar Chandana told the BBC before the launch. Chandana says today, access to space remains "a major bottleneck, with satellite operators often waiting for months or even years for a launch opportunity" and that their venture expects to change that. He says Skyroot aims to cut long waits for satellite launches by offering dedicated missions for small payloads. Instead of sharing space on large rockets that fly on fixed schedules, customers can book a launch tailored to their satellite and its required orbit - much like taking a taxi instead of waiting for a train. "If you want to just go to a friend's house, you don't need a train, you book a cab, an Uber. What we are offering is a cab service to space, which can be used to ride to a unique location in the orbit to place a satellite or visit a station." Skyroot's model would appear similar to that of Rocket Lab in the US, which provides small-lift launch vehicles. The Indian test launch mission called Aagman - Sanskrit for arrival - has placed into orbit six payloads. They include scientific instruments such as a robotic arm for removing space debris, an Earth observation camera and satellites, including one from a German company.

World Cup 2026 Creates Big Financial Winners and Losers The 2026 FIFA World Cup is not only delivering unforgettable football moments but also generating billions of dollars across the global sports industry. With more teams, more matches, and millions of fans watching worldwide, the tournament has become one of the biggest sporting events ever held. While FIFA is enjoying record breaking revenue, many supporters are struggling with the rising cost of attending matches. FIFA Set to Earn Record Revenue FIFA is expected to become the biggest financial winner of the 2026 World Cup. After earning a record $7.6 billion from the 2022 tournament in Qatar, football's governing body is on track to surpass that figure during the competition hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The tournament has expanded from 32 to 48 teams, creating more matches, higher television audiences, and greater commercial opportunities. Experts believe FIFA's revenue across its current four year business cycle could approach $13 billion. The organization generates income through broadcasting rights, sponsorship agreements, hospitality packages, licensing deals, ticket sales, and its official ticket resale platform. FIFA also collects fees from buyers and sellers using its resale marketplace, adding another valuable source of income. Expansion Brings More Business Opportunities The larger tournament format has increased global interest in football. More participating nations attract new audiences, sponsors, and broadcasters. FIFA is even considering expanding future World Cups to 64 teams, which could bring additional countries such as China and India into the competition and further increase worldwide viewership. Fans Face Rising Costs While football supporters are creating lifelong memories, many are paying record prices to experience the tournament in person. Ticket prices have increased sharply, partly because of FIFA's dynamic pricing system, which raises prices when demand grows. This approach has received criticism from many fans who believe major sporting events should remain affordable. Even United States President Donald Trump said he would not pay the reported $1,000 ticket price for his country's opening match against Paraguay. The cost becomes even higher for the biggest matches. Official tickets for the World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey reached $32,970, while some resale listings climbed above $2 million, making the final inaccessible for many football supporters. A Tournament That Rewards Business More Than Fans The expanded World Cup has created enormous financial opportunities for FIFA, broadcasters, sponsors, and commercial partners. At the same time, many loyal supporters face expensive tickets and travel costs that make attending matches increasingly difficult. As football continues to grow around the world, the challenge will be finding the right balance between commercial success and keeping the sport accessible for its fans.

US Hotels Fear Weak World Cup Tourism as Bookings Fall Short Tourism expectations fail to match reality US hotels are worried the upcoming World Cup will not deliver the expected tourism boost. Many host cities are reporting lower-than-expected bookings, raising doubts about the event’s economic impact. A report from the American Hotel & Lodging Association shows demand is falling behind forecasts across most locations. The group represents more than 32,000 hotel properties and a large share of franchised hotels in the United States. Conflict between booking data and ticket sales The association says hotel demand does not match FIFA’s claim that over five million tickets have already been sold. It warns that the expected financial gains from the tournament could be lower than projected. Accusations over hotel room block bookings The report also criticizes FIFA for reserving large numbers of hotel rooms in advance. According to the association, this created artificial demand and pushed prices higher in early stages of booking. Later, FIFA cancelled a significant portion of those reservations. Hotel operators say this left gaps in availability and disrupted normal pricing patterns. FIFA has rejected these claims and does not agree with the criticism. Other factors behind weak demand Hotels say several issues are discouraging visitors. High ticket prices for matches are one concern. Expensive local transport and taxes are also adding pressure. Some operators also point to political tensions as another reason international travel interest has slowed. Economic outlook remains uncertain With lower bookings and mixed signals from ticket sales, the hospitality sector is now unsure about the World Cup’s overall economic benefit. Many hotels are preparing for weaker-than-expected revenue during the tournament period.

Lauren Laverne Reveals Smouldering Myeloma Diagnosis, Says She Feels Well Television and radio presenter Lauren Laverne has shared that she has been diagnosed with smouldering myeloma, a rare blood and bone marrow disorder that can sometimes develop into blood cancer. Despite the diagnosis, she reassured fans that she currently feels well and does not need medical treatment. The 48 year old broadcaster explained that the condition has no symptoms in her case. Doctors will continue to monitor her health through regular blood tests, MRI scans, and bone marrow examinations. She also said that the chance of the condition progressing into blood cancer is considered low. A Condition Found During Routine Monitoring Lauren Laverne revealed that doctors discovered the disorder during routine medical monitoring following her previous cancer diagnosis. She said the condition is unrelated to her earlier illness or a recent surgery. According to Laverne, many people with smouldering myeloma never realize they have it because it often causes no symptoms. Cancer survivors are more likely to receive an early diagnosis because they usually undergo regular health checks. Living With a Chronic Blood Disorder Although there is currently no cure for smouldering myeloma, Laverne said she does not require treatment at this stage. However, she explained that the condition slightly weakens her immune system, making regular medical monitoring essential. She admitted that receiving another serious diagnosis within two years has been emotionally challenging. Even so, she remains positive and hopes that sharing her experience will encourage others facing similar health issues. Message About Early Detection Laverne praised her family doctor for investigating her ongoing low iron levels instead of dismissing them. She encouraged people to speak up about persistent health concerns and seek specialist advice if something does not feel right. She believes early diagnosis can make a significant difference and urged others to advocate for their own health by asking questions and requesting further tests when necessary. Taking a Short Break Before Returning The presenter said she plans to take a short holiday before returning to work as usual. She also sent her support to everyone living with similar conditions and thanked those who have supported her throughout her health journey. Her announcement has drawn widespread messages of encouragement from fans and colleagues, who wished her good health and a smooth recovery.

Jayson Gillham Loses Gaza Comments Case Against Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Acclaimed British Australian pianist Jayson Gillham has lost his workplace discrimination case against the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) over comments he made about the Gaza war during a concert. The Federal Court ruled that the orchestra did not cancel his performance because of his political beliefs. Justice Graeme Hill said the decision was made because MSO wanted to manage possible damage to its reputation and business after the comments. Court Rules MSO Acted Over Reputation Concerns Gillham took legal action against the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra after it cancelled his scheduled recital in August 2024. The cancellation happened shortly after he spoke about the deaths of Palestinian journalists during a Melbourne performance. During the concert, he introduced a five minute piece titled Witness, composed by Connor D'Netto and dedicated to journalists in Gaza. Gillham told the audience that more than 100 Palestinian journalists had been killed since the start of the Israel Gaza war in October 2023. He also accused Israel of carrying out targeted attacks against journalists. He said the killing of journalists was a war crime under international law and argued that such actions prevented the world from seeing evidence of possible war crimes. Judge Says Political Views Were Not the Reason Justice Graeme Hill rejected Gillham's claim that he faced discrimination because of his political views. The judge said the MSO had a policy of avoiding public support for either side in the Israel Gaza conflict. He also noted that classical musicians usually do not make political statements from the stage without approval from the event organiser. According to the ruling, the orchestra cancelled the recital because it believed the comments could negatively affect its public image and operations. Orchestra Later Called Cancellation an Error The MSO received three complaints following Gillham's remarks and decided to cancel his upcoming recital on 15 August 2024. The decision caused a strong public reaction, with almost 500 complaints being submitted against the cancellation. The orchestra later admitted that cancelling the performance was an error and attempted to arrange a new date for the event. During the trial, MSO argued that its stage was meant for musical performances rather than personal political statements. Gillham's legal team argued that he had the right to express his beliefs and should not face workplace consequences because of them. Gillham Responds After Court Decision Following the judgment, Gillham said he was disappointed and needed time to consider the decision before making further comments. The case lasted three weeks and included evidence from Gillham, MSO executives, and other witnesses. The ruling has renewed discussions about freedom of expression, political statements by artists, and the responsibilities of cultural organisations.

Major Premier League clubs including Manchester United, Chelsea, and Crystal Palace prepare for summer managerial changes as top coaches
SHARE

Big clubs are going to have some changes in management before the summer. The summer is going to be an uncertain time for managers in the Premier League. A lot of clubs are already thinking about making changes after a season where a lot of head coaches lost their jobs. Even some big name managers might be affected as the top teams get ready to make some decisions.

Here is what is going on with the managers

This season has already seen ten Premier League managers leave their jobs. The recent one to leave was Liam Rosenior, who lost his job at Chelsea after being in charge for a short time.

Looking ahead it seems like there are going to be more changes. People are talking about what’s going to happen with Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, Marco Silva at Fulham, Arne Slot at Liverpool and Eddie Howe at Newcastle.

At the time a lot of clubs are getting ready to hire new managers, which could make this one of the busiest times for hiring new managers in a long time.

Manchester United and Michael Carrick

Manchester United are still trying to figure out who they want to be their manager for the term. Michael Carrick, who is in charge for now after Ruben Amorim left has done a job and the players really like him.

He has helped the team get through a time and if they can make it into the Champions League that will make it even more likely that he will get to stay.

However some of the people who make decisions for the club think that they need a manager who has experience at the top level. The players and everyone else really respect Michael Carrick. The club might still want to hire someone who is more well known if they can.

Chelsea are looking for a manager again

Chelsea are looking for a new manager after they let Liam Rosenior go. Since the club got owners in 2022 they have had to hire a new manager several times.

The people in charge of the club are talking about who they want to hire. They have not made a list of their top choices public yet. They are thinking about a lot of people based on how much experience they have what kind of coach they are and what they can do for the club in the long term.

Andoni Iraola is someone who they really like because of the job he did at Bournemouth. They are also thinking about Marco Silva depending on what happens with his contract at Fulham.

Some other people they are considering are Edin Terzic, Xabi Alonso, Cesc Fabregas and Eddie Howe if he becomes available.

Crystal Palace are getting ready

Crystal Palace are also going to hire a manager this summer after Oliver Glasner said he was leaving. The club has already started looking at who they might want to hire and making a list of their choices.

Andoni Iraola is someone who they really want to hire. They think he would be a great fit. The club is confident that they can convince him to take the job.

Some other managers they are thinking about are Frank Lampard, Thomas Frank, Kieran McKenna and Sean Dyche. Crystal Palace also want a manager who can work closely with the people in charge of recruiting players.

Other managers who are getting attention

There are a lot of managers in Europe who might become available this summer. Andoni Iraola is still one of the in demand coaches because of the good job he did in the Premier League.

Xabi Alonso might get some new opportunities and some experienced coaches from tournaments might also become available this summer.

What it all means

This summer could be a big deal for the Premier League. With a lot of clubs making changes and a lot of good managers available the next few months could be really interesting for English football. The Premier League is going to look really different after all the changes that are going to happen. Big clubs, like Manchester United and Chelsea are going to have managers and that is going to change everything. The Premier League is going to be really exciting to watch.

Previous Article Explosion in Kerala Firecracker Unit Kills Thirteen During Festival Preparations Incident Details A powerful explosion hit a firecracker making unit in Thrissur, Kerala, in southern India. Thirteen workers lost their lives in the blast. Around forty workers were inside a cluster of sheds preparing fireworks for an upcoming Hindu festival. The explosion was so strong that people living several kilometers away felt it. Some residents thought it was an earthquake. Nearby homes also suffered damage due to the blast. Casualties and Rescue Efforts Emergency teams and local residents rushed to the site right after the explosion. They helped pull injured workers and bodies from the damaged sheds. Several people were injured in the incident. Officials confirmed that five of them are in critical condition and receiving treatment in hospitals. Link to Thrissur Pooram Festival The workers were preparing fireworks for the Thiruvambady Temple, one of the main participants in Thrissur Pooram. This is a major annual temple festival in Kerala known for its large fireworks displays. The fireworks are usually prepared in designated units that operate with permission for festival use. Large crowds gather every year to watch the final fireworks show during the festival. Safety Concerns and Past Incidents Firecracker factories in India have faced repeated safety issues over the years. Similar accidents have occurred in nearby regions, including Tamil Nadu, where a recent explosion killed many people. The industry is often linked with poor safety conditions, especially during peak festival production periods. Workers handle explosive materials in tightly packed sheds, which increases risk. Cause Still Under Investigation Officials have not confirmed the exact cause of the explosion. Some local authorities suggested that high temperatures may have contributed to the blast. However, investigators say the cause is still unclear and under review. Authorities are also checking how many workers were present at the time and whether safety rules were properly followed.
