Smoke from hundreds of wildfires burning across Canada has spread into several parts of the United States, creating dangerous air quality and raising health concerns for millions of people. Cities including New York, Chicago, Detroit, Toronto, Pittsburgh, and Toledo have experienced thick smoke, reducing visibility and forcing officials to issue public health alerts.

Authorities have encouraged residents to stay indoors as smoke continues to affect air quality across the region. Many outdoor activities have also been cancelled because breathing smoky air can increase the risk of health problems, especially for children, older adults, and people with heart or lung conditions.

Smoke Covers Major Cities

A thick layer of wildfire smoke has covered skylines across northeastern North America. In New York City, landmarks such as the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty became difficult to see because of the heavy haze.

Officials described the situation as a serious public health concern. Air quality reached unhealthy levels in many areas, while parts of western New York recorded very unhealthy conditions. As a result, many residents wore protective masks while travelling outdoors.

Hundreds of Wildfires Continue to Burn

Canada is currently battling more than 800 active wildfires, with dozens of new fires reported in a single day. Most of these fires remain out of control, making firefighting efforts extremely challenging.

The largest group of fires is burning in northwestern Ontario. Strong winds continue to push smoke across Ontario, the Great Lakes, and into several US states, affecting millions of people far from the fire zones.

Communities Forced to Evacuate

The wildfire emergency has also forced people to leave their homes in northern Ontario. Several First Nations communities received evacuation orders as flames moved closer to residential areas.

Local leaders described the destruction as devastating, saying some communities have suffered extensive damage and residents have lost homes and important community buildings.

Outdoor Events Cancelled

Poor air quality has disrupted daily life across several states. Children’s summer camps cancelled outdoor activities, beaches near popular lakes closed temporarily, and public events were postponed.

In Chicago, an outdoor concert by the rock band The Black Keys was rescheduled because of hazardous air quality. Officials said protecting public health remained the top priority until conditions improve.

Health Officials Urge People to Take Precautions

Health authorities recommend limiting outdoor activities while smoke remains in the air. People are advised to keep windows closed, use air filtration where possible, and wear high quality masks if they must spend time outside.

New York activated emergency air quality measures and expanded its heat response plan. The city also opened hundreds of cooling centres and distributed KN95 masks to help reduce exposure to harmful smoke particles.

Officials continue to monitor the situation as changing weather conditions could affect how long the smoke remains over affected areas.
