The US president declared on Monday that federal funds will no longer be used to support a number of September commercials that promoted him and his administration.

On his platform Truth Social, Trump stated, “The radical Left is upset that I am taking ads, which I consider to be a positive promotion for our great USA and paying for them with USA money.”

US Government Ads Spark Political Controversy

In the US, the advertisements themselves have generated considerable criticism. The phrase “paid for by the US government”—that is, financed with tax dollars—marked them when they ran in September between well-known programs like Saturday Nite Live and football games.

The commercials featured images and videos of Trump himself, along with combative statements that he would “expel the warmongers” or “throw off the sick political class,” and make sure that the US did not turn into a communist state. They also featured scenes such as the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro by US troops earlier this year.

Public funds for personal praise

The campaign was met with harsh condemnation from a number of NGOs and political rivals. In addition to the fact that using taxpayer money for political commercials is illegal in the United States, the ads also surfaced just before the midterms, which are elections that take place close to the middle of a president’s four-year term.

The US TV network  revealed on Tuesday that the US Department of Homeland Security had paid an agency $20 million (€17.9 million) for a “national media campaign” based on contracting documents.

Public service announcements are really covered under the “rather standard” practice that Trump mentioned.

Trump Ads Face Scrutiny Over Taxpayer Funds

In a public complaint to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the group stated, “Federal law explicitly prohibits using appropriated public funds for government propaganda, self-aggrandizement, or partisan political advertising.””Yet, that is exactly the nature of Trump’s recent campaign ads.”

Concerns have also been expressed by independent specialists. The timing of the tapes was problematic, according to Patrick Malone, a professor in the Public Administration and Policy department at American University in Washington, DC.He told DW, “You’re not supposed to use taxpayer dollars to pay for anything that’s campaign-related.”

Will the Republicans keep their majority after midterms?

In the midterm elections, voters select members of Congress—the legislative arm of the federal government made up of the Senate and the House of Representatives—rather than presidents.

All of the House of Representatives seats and almost one-third of the Senate seats will be up for election on November 3. Governors will also be chosen by some states.

Trump may have been attempting to highlight the accomplishments of his party because Republicans have not been doing well in recent surveys.

Poll Shows Shifting Voter Support for Trump

Monday suggests that this could soon change. “Voters age 50 or older preferred Trump’s party over the Democratic Party by just 2 percentage points — 44% to 42% — compared to an 8-point Republican advantage in December,” it concluded.

This age group “is particularly important for midterm elections, when older Americans historically have made up large shares of the electorate.”

“Democrats led by 18 points,” according to the poll, among voters under 50.

According to the survey, “32% of Americans giving a thumbs up to Trump’s presidency” also revealed negative views of Trump.

Republicans shy away from Trump's support

This may also be one of the causes of Republican candidates’ seeming lack of enthusiasm for public meetings with the president, which are often a highlight of a campaign trail.

Many Americans link Trump to exorbitant living expenses or the ongoing conflict with Iran, which has been going on for more than six months.

On condition of anonymity, a Republican source warned the news website Politico that “candidates would come down with COVID” to escape having to attend if the president were to visit a swing state where Democratic and Republican support among voters is roughly equal.

Trump promises $5,000 payout if Republicans win

As if that weren’t enough, he also pledged to give out $5,000 to every American who could cast a ballot if Republicans continued to have a majority in both chambers of Congress.

The federal government could have to pay more than $1.2 trillion to fulfilll that commitment, but many doubt that will ever happen. He doesn’t have any money to accomplish it. Congress would need to authorize and appropriate it, Mallone clarified. “I think the likelihood is very slim,” he said. “It’s one of those things like ‘Mexico is going to pay for the wall.'”
