The route to peace, sanctions, information cooperation, and Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy are all contributing factors to the growing strain on the US-Ukraine relationship.
Additionally, there seems to be growing mistrust between Volodymyr Zelensky, the leader of Ukraine, and US President Donald Trump.
On Monday, Trump said it was “time for somebody else to negotiate on behalf of Ukraine” and accused Zelensky of having no idea what he was talking about.

Ukraine Defies Trump Over Russian Oil Strikes
Trump stated last week that Zelensky was harder to work with than Russian President Vladimir Putin and referred to Kyiv’s attacks on Russian oil refineries as a “disgrace.”
Zelensky responded in a Sunday interview by stating that it was “better to have partners who are very open and clear than to have those who are killers, even with a smile on their face,” perhaps alluding to Trump’s ties to Russia.
Since the heated encounter in the White House eighteen months ago, the relationship appears to be at its lowest point.
Zelensky has often stated that if Ukraine’s security can be ensured, he is amenable to peace talks.
The president of Ukraine stated that he had “nonstop communication” with Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and US ambassador Steve Witkoff on Sunday in an effort to promote peace.
According to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Zelensky and Witkoff are scheduled to meet in Oslo, the country’s capital, on Tuesday. Kushner will participate virtually at the meeting.
US and Russia Seek Progress Toward Peace
Dmitry Peskov, a spokesperson for the Kremlin, stated on Tuesday that he hoped Witkoff, his team, and Putin would meet soon so the US side could inform the Russian leader “on their contacts with both the Ukrainians and the Europeans.”
The White House has been contacted by CNN for comment about the meetings.
Zelensky wrote on X, “We are doing everything on our part to make this happen, and to ensure that America’s position is strong and helps bring peace closer.”
“We have welcomed literally EVERY attempt by our partners to bring about this war, and Ukraine never wanted this war.”
Zelensky Speaks With Pope Amid Ukraine Crisis
According to the Vatican, Zelensky also had a conversation with Pope Leo XIV on Monday.
Days after speaking with Putin over the phone about the “grave humanitarian situation” in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky, where Ukrainian authorities claim about 2,000 civilians are stranded without access to food or basic medical care, the pope addressed the president of Ukraine.
Trump has justified previous sanctions concessions to Russia, such as a waiver to let Russian diesel shipments and another that exempts Russia from broad economic penalties imposed by the US Congress.
Ukraine Raises Concerns Over Missed Missile Warnings
Zelensky stated on Monday that Kyiv had not been informed in advance of Sunday night’s ballistic missile assaults, which he believes had happened several times in the previous week.
“Once again, there was no early warning from our partners, and another Russian ballistic missile attack occurred overnight in multiple waves.”
The Ukrainian military relies heavily on US satellite networks to alert them of impending missile threats. Russian ballistic missile strikes are intended to destroy vital infrastructure and severely impair human life.
Rubio told reporters on Monday, “I don’t know where he’s getting these things or why he’s saying these things to the press.”
