Emilia Pérez, Jacques Audiard’s grandiose musical, broke a record for a non-English-language film when it entered the 97th Academy Awards as a frontrunner with 13 nominations.
But the movie only took home two awards: Best Original Song for El Mal and Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña.
The Hollywood Reporter claims that the campaign’s chances of winning an Oscar were severely damaged when star Karla Sofía Gascón’s racist and anti-Muslim comments were resurrected and sparked controversy.
Emilia Pérez, meantime, won seven medals at the César Awards in France, including Best Director and Best Film for Audiard.
