Rain exposed everything: Hafiz Naeem of JI criticizes MQM-P and PPP for Karachi’s infrastructure problems

JI leader accuses his rival parties of being "complicit" in corruption in Karachi's city administration

As the city’s infrastructural flaws were “exposed” following heavy rain on Saturday, Jamat-e-Islami’s (JI) Karachi Emir Hafiz Naeem on Sunday criticized the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) for their alleged corruption.

Ahead of the general elections on February 8, which will take place on the 8th, Karachi had sporadic heavy rainfall that caused disruptions to daily life in the city. All political parties were actively campaigning to win over voters with their passionate promises.

It became nearly difficult for commuters to go throughout the city due to the accumulation of tons of water on the streets and even the main thoroughfares.

In response, Naeem charged PPP and MQM-P of being “complicit” in “corruption” in the city’s administration during a press conference in Karachi.

The lawmaker said that last night’s 52 millimeters of rain caused the entire city to drown. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab, he said, “life goes on” despite the provinces receiving more rain. He made this comparison between the two situations.

He claimed that the rain from yesterday exposed PPP’s shortcomings.

Although Naeem said that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation failed to carry out its obligations, JI’s councilors and UC chairmen continued to drive despite being told not to.

The leader of the JI criticized Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, claiming that the PPP leader continues to tax the populace. With his back to the MQM-P, Naeem declared that the party had “sold its mandate to the waderas (feudal lords)” in Karachi.

“They [MQM-P] used to claim that they don’t need anyone’s support but today, they couldn’t do anything even with the support of 10 parties,” he stated.

Naeem elaborated on the state of affairs in the city following the rain, stating that around 120 electricity feeders had tripped and that clean and sewage water are mixed together.

Subsequently, he declared his determination to establish a government in Sindh and clarified that JI is not running a campaign to join the opposition. He then exhorted the people to support his party, promising them success.
