As the country awaits the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) announcement of the poll results, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has acknowledged a “huge” voter turnout in favor of its arch-rival Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), but it remains optimistic about its supremo Nawaz Sharif’s fourth term as prime minister.
His views come as mystery surrounds the 2024 general elections due to an unusually long delay in results—a development worsened by the government’s decision to temporarily stop cellular networks nationwide.
Meanwhile, the ECP’s 30-minute deadline for provincial election commissioners and returning officers (ROs) to issue poll results has expired.
Continuing his position in the NA-71 Sialkot-II constituency, Asif stated that he has an advantage of approximately 30,000 votes.
“One should refrain from commenting on mere 15% results [out of the total polling stations],” he remarked, referring to various poll-related predictions and rumors.
Recalling that the results for his constituency were announced the next morning in the 2018 elections, the PML-N stalwart stated that one should wait for the ECP to publish the final results.
His statements come as the politician faces off against PTI-backed Rehana Dar, the mother of former PTI leader Usman Dar, in the same constituency.
Meanwhile, prominent PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal has expressed hope that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will quickly release the election results.
