ISLAMABAD: The establishment of Pakistan’s future government, which is expected in the coming days or weeks, is contingent on the significant number of independent candidates who won the recent general elections on February 8, according to The News.
According to election laws, independents must join a political party of their choosing three days after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) issues its gazette announcement.
Independents, on the other hand, play an important role when political parties leading the race require a particular number of MPs to create a majority in the lower house, allowing them to form a government.
The independent winners can only choose one without being assigned a stake in the reserved seats, set aside for women and religious minorities. Once they formally announce their intention to join political parties, which will be under the law, reserved seats will be allocated to them based on their respective numerical strengths.
