ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday postponed its decision on journalist Asad Toor’s plea against arrest and alleged harassment by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).
During today’s hearing, IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq noted the disparities between the investigation agency’s inquiry and the First Information Report (FIR) filed against Toor.
The development comes after Judicial Magistrate Muhammad Shabbir’s court prolonged the journalist’s physical remand by two days following his arrest in connection with an anti-institutional campaign.
It is important to note that Toor is charged with allegedly organizing a harmful campaign against the courts on social media sites X and YouTube.
The FIR further alleges that the journalist, who went on a hunger strike in protest of the FIA’s arrest, supported anti-state actions on social media and has been charged under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016.
At the start of today’s session, IHC CJ Farooq questioned whether the FIR was filed as a result of the investigation for which the suspect was initially served with notice.
