In a bid to woo Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) parliamentarians ahead of the presidential election, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has assured that his father, Asif Ali Zardari, who is poised to become Pakistan’s next president, will look after Punjab’s lawmakers as he does for himself.
The presidential election is scheduled for tomorrow (Saturday) in the assembly, with the ruling alliance agreeing on Zardari as the consensus candidate.
Bilawal told members of the Punjab Assembly, which is dominated by the PML-N, that he was there to ask them to vote for his father in the presidential election on March 9.
“Asif Zardari will take care of you as he takes care of me,” he declared, showering praise on the experienced politician, who will serve as president for the second time if elected.
Former foreign minister Bilawal stated that Zardari “meets everyone like he meets his own party’s representatives”.
According to the youthful politician, the president’s position is to represent the Centre, or federal government.
Speaking on the occasion, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz praised Bilawal and stated that her party MPs would have voted for Zardari, the coalition partners’ jointly agreed-upon nominee, even if the PPP chairman had not requested it.
Maryam, the first female chief administrator of the province, also stated that the PML-N and the PPP were competitors in the general elections but serious parties put aside their differences for the betterment and interest of the country.
