ISLAMABAD: For the first time since 2017, the Islamabad administration increased water costs by 200% to 300% beginning in January 2024, according to The News.

According to a water supply directorate official, the Municipal Corporation of Islamabad (MCI) collects Rs700 million per month from consumers to cover entire expenses, which include monthly salaries and maintenance charges.

The report stated that consumers residing on plot size less than 250 yards would now pay Rs480 per month as water charges, houses on plot size 251 yards to 499 yards Rs624, houses on plot size 500 yards to 999 yards Rs1,500 per month, houses on plot size 1,000 yards to 1,999 yards Rs2,000 per month, and those residing in houses constructed on plot size 2,000 yards and above will pay Rs3,500 per month.

The MCI has imposed a monthly water tariff of Rs600 for dwellings of various kinds in model villages, while inhabitants of government houses would pay between Rs240 and Rs940.

Meanwhile, for residences with installed water meters, the MCI has set a rate of Rs480 per 1,000 gallons for water supplies of up to 5,000 gallons. Those who use more than 5,000 to 20,000 gallons of water would be charged Rs70 per gallon each month.

In addition, hotels and motels in the National Park region, as well as commercial buildings in the Blue region, will pay the MCI Rs1.5 per square foot. The similar rate has been set for private hospitals.
