Before the Supreme Court’s suo motu notice on the subject, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar stated that Tassaduq Hussain Jillani, the former chief justice of Pakistan, had resigned from leading an investigation panel on the letter sent by the judges of the Islamabad High Court (IHC).
Speaking on Geo News’ Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath, the minister stated, “The Prime Minister House was informed about Jillani’s letter an hour before the suo moto notice.”
Unexpectedly, former CJP Jillani declined to lead the government-appointed one-man commission to look into the IHC judges’ claims of intelligence agencies meddling in court cases.
While apologizing, the former Chief Justice stated that it would have been “violative of judicial propriety” for him to look into the matter because the judges had written a letter to the Chief Justice and the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC). He further claimed that the matter might have been “within the jurisdiction of a constitutional body which is the Supreme Judicial Council or the Supreme Court of Pakistan itself.”
His letter became public shortly after the Supreme Court of Pakistan took suo motu notice earlier today and assembled a seven-member bench under the leadership of Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa to consider the case. This action raised rumors that the Jillani had chosen to resign as head of the investigation in response to the top court’s decision.
