The most wickets of any England spinner, 297, were taken by slow left-armer Underwood in 86 Test matches between 1966 and 1982.
During a brilliant 24-year domestic career, he represented solely Kent, the county of his birth, and grabbed 2,465 wickets in 676 first-class matches total.
In addition to serving as president of the Marylebone Cricket Club in 2009, Underwood was granted an MBE in 1981.
In addition, he claimed 32 wickets in 26 one-day matches. Had he not joined the rebel tour of South Africa in 1981–82 and the World Series Cricket in 1977, he would have played more for England.
Underwood, often known as “Deadly,” was one of the first 55 people to be admitted into the International Cricket Council Hall of fame.
