Azam Nazeer Tarar, the federal minister for law and justice, asserted on Tuesday that “just 23% of missing persons’ cases are pending” and encouraged interested parties to address the long-standing problem with both legal and political measures.
The law minister stated during a press conference in Islamabad with Federal Minister for Information Attaullah Tarar that the committee on the missing persons’ issue is being reformed on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s orders. He went on, “The government is serious about addressing this issue.”
Around 8,000 of the 10,200 cases of missing persons that were reported to the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances (CIoED) have been investigated, according to the law minister.
He stated that a committee on the past government, chaired by the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), was established to issue with the representation of all stakeholders including Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), and others.
