The world’s largest music publisher has issued letters to Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI requesting to know if their songs have been utilized to construct artificial intelligence (AI) systems.
Sony Music, which represents artists such as Beyoncé and Adele, prohibits anyone from training, producing, or profiting from AI using its songs without permission.
In a letter issued to over 700 businesses, Sony Music stated that it has “reason to believe” that the recipients “may already have made unauthorized uses” of its music.
The news has contacted Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI for comments.
Corporations have been given a deadline by Sony Music to respond, and the company has declared that it will enforce its copyright “to the full extent permitted by applicable law,” which includes the upcoming AI Act from the EU.
