After a difficult start to their qualifiers, the Lionesses are currently third in their group behind France and Sweden, with plans to defend their European championship in Switzerland next year.
Sarina Wiegman’s team has so far drawn with Sweden, defeated the Republic of Ireland, and lost to France. In four days, they will play France again on Tuesday.
“You’ve got to beat the best to be the best, and we have a target on our back since winning the Euros,” Mead, who plays for Arsenal, said.
However, we have enough talent on this team to compete and win against any group. You have to defeat the best in order to be the best, but it’s a difficult group—some would even refer to it as the group of death.”
Mead gave England the lead at St. James’ Park on Friday, but the Lionesses fell 2-1 after giving up two badly defended corners.
However, the 29-year-old is certain that England can prevail at Saint-Etienne.
“When we look at the game it’s small margins,” she stated. “It’s quite frustrating that we allowed in two set pieces, on which we pride ourselves greatly.
“We have no excuse not to if we bring the game we know how to play.
