RAWALPINDI: The Pakistan Army has elevated a female officer from the minority Christian community to the rank of brigadier, a first.
In Pakistani history, Helen Mary Roberts, an Army Medical Corps officer, is the first one-star officer from a minority community.
The Selection Board advanced a number of officers, including Brigadier Roberts, to the rank of full colonel and brigadier, as The News revealed on Sunday.
Last year, at a Christmas celebration held at Christ Church in Rawalpindi, General Asim Munir, the Chief of Army Staff, praised the contribution of the Christian community to Pakistan’s progress.
The head of the army had also praised the community’s efforts to advance national defense, high-quality healthcare, philanthropy, and education.
COAS Munir had highlighted the importance of the Christian community and conveyed his deep appreciation for it.
Roberts received congratulations from Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif for her elevation to the rank of brigadier in the Army Medical Corps in the meanwhile.
“As the first female from a minority background to hold this esteemed rank, Brigadier Roberts, a member of the Pakistani Christian community, has made history,” the prime minister said.
