When Israel targeted the school that had been turned into a refuge, it claimed to be targeting a “Hamas compound”.
At least 39 individuals were killed in the airstrike, according to Hamas-affiliated media, with 23 of those being women and children, according to local health experts.
Regarding the two hits that occurred on an adjacent residence on Thursday morning in the Nuseirat neighborhood, there were differing reports.
The Associated Press was not immediately able to independently confirm the details of what had happened.
The Palestinian relief organization UNRWA is in charge of the school that the Israeli military claimed was attacked by one of its fighter jets.
It claimed that Hamas and the Islamic Jihad exploited the school as a front for their activities without providing any proof right away.
Twenty to thirty fighters were in the school, according to a later statement from an Israeli military official.
“Before the strike, a number of steps were taken to reduce the risk of harming uninvolved civilians during the strike, including conducting aerial surveillance, and additional intelligence information,” the Israeli military stated.
Israel’s assertions were denied by Ismail al Thawabta, head of the Hamas-run government media office in Gaza, who claimed that they were made “to justify the brutal crime it conducted against dozens of displaced people”.
