ISLAMABAD: The ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) was able to persuade a significant ally, leading the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) to rescind its plan to boycott the federal budget 2024–25 session of the National Assembly on Wednesday.
The PPP’s top leaders were met several times by Deputy Prime Minister Senator Ishaq Dar in an apparent attempt to persuade them to attend the federal budget session.
Syed Khurshid Shah and Syed Naveed Qamar, two prominent PPP leaders, recently made it to parliament. Only Khurshid, Naveed, and Aijaz Jakhrani are expected to attend today’s meeting, according to sources.
The PPP, a significant political ally of the ruling PML-N, said in advance of the federal budget 2024–25 that it will not be attending the budget session.
Ahead of the federal budget for FY25, PPP Information Secretary Shazia Marri revealed the significant decision made by the Bilawal-led party in an interview with News.
She urged the ruling Nawaz-led party to fulfill the terms of the agreement signed with her party and said that PPP MPs would not be present at the budget session.
Marri expressed dissatisfaction about the PML-N-led federal government’s failure to consult her party on the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP).
She continued by saying that the party’s lawmakers voiced grave concerns about not being included in the federal government’s deliberations regarding the budget.
