KARACHI: With the mercury reaching 42°C and the “feels-like” temperature in the port city surpassing 50°C a day earlier, Karachi has been experiencing an alarming increase in the number of heatstroke cases in the last few days.

150 cases of heatstroke have been admitted to Karachi’s Civil Hospital in the past two days; among them are 40 residents who have been hospitalized since Tuesday morning due to extreme heat.

According to the Additional Medical Superintendent of Civil Hospital, numerous patients were discharged from the hospital after receiving the appropriate medical attention because of the extreme heat-related dehydration.

The head of the port city’s emergency service recommended residents to stay indoors and drink a lot of water.

The hospital’s administration claims that there have been no deaths from heatstroke.

On the other hand, eight residents of the hospital passed away yesterday due to the extreme heat.

Consequently, no deaths were reported on Tuesday at Jinnah Hospital, another provincial government-run medical facility.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reports that Karachi is currently experiencing exceptionally hot and muggy weather, with no sea breezes and a high relative humidity.

The provincial capital would see the same weather for the following three days, according to the weather forecast service. The city reported a high temperature of 41.3°C today, with tomorrow’s highs expected to be between 37° and 39°C.

However, the PMD forecast that Thursday’s high could reach 40°C once more.
