Multiple reports state that the Boston Celtics and Tatum have agreed to a five-year, $314 million supermax extension with a player option, making it the richest contract in NBA history.

The 26-year-old standout was crucial to the Celtics’ five-game victory over the Dallas Mavericks, which resulted in the team’s first championship since 2008. Tatum averaged 22.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 7.2 assists during that series, but Jaylen Brown, his All-Star counterpart, won MVP.

Given how nicely Brown and Beantown complement one other, the Celtics gave Brown his then-record extension last year, so it made sense for the team to offer Tatum.

Though this was a predictable decision, the five-time All-Star and four-time All-NBA pick has lived up to the hype ever since the Celtics selected him third overall out of Duke in the 2017 draft.
