Category 3 Hurricane Beryl is expected to make landfall early on Friday morning, posing a threat to the two million residents of the area as well as the popular tourist destinations of Tulum and Cancún.
As the hurricane makes landfall on the southeast coast of the nation, beaches are blocked, and hundreds of military personnel are sent in to assist.
In a statement made on Friday at 0100 CDT (0600 GMT), the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) stated that “dangerous” conditions would “begin shortly” in the area.
“Hurricane-like winds, dangerous storm surges, and damaging waves” are predicted for the area.
In the Caribbean, roofs have been ripped off of buildings, thousands of households are without power, and at least ten people are reported to have killed and many are missing.
The Mexican government has taken action to get the coastline ready for the hurricane.
Hotels’ windows have been boarded up, schools have been closed, and emergency shelters for residents and visitors have been established in the areas that would be most affected.
Cancún locals have flocked to supermarkets in order to restock on supplies, but some have found bare shelves there.
To aid the populace, about 8,000 soldiers from the national guard, army, and air force have been sent to the Yucatán Peninsula.
