Nick Martini and Jonathan India each launched home runs to give the Reds an early 2-0 lead. Then, in the fifth inning, Spencer Steer launched a three-run shot. Marcus Stroman, the Yankees’ starting pitcher, was the source of all the dingers that increased the margin to 5-0.
Ben Rice and Austin Wells each hit home runs to give New York two runs back in the bottom of the fifth. Even though Juan Soto hit a home run in the seventh inning, the damage had already been done.
In the end, Cincinnati defeated the Yankees 8-4 to complete the sweep.
However, before the Reds could rejoice, the Yankees supporters made matters worse.
Jeimer Candelario of the Reds hit a seemingly innocuous ball to centerfield in the top of the ninth inning. Trent Grisham, an outfielder with the Yankees, took his time retrieving the ball and then mishandled it when attempting to position himself to throw it back to the infield. Candalerio moved to second after making a cue-up.
The Yankees supporters, who have witnessed nearly nothing but defeats since the series finale against the Atlanta Braves back in June, showered the field with jeers.
