The government’s request to raise the basic power rate was granted by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) on Thursday, meaning that the price increase will be Rs7.12 per unit.

Details indicate that the federal government applied to the Nepra for a unified power rate, which will now be available to K-Electric and all other electricity consumers in the nation.

Customers who use up to 200 units, however, will be excluded from this hike for a three-month period.

A few days prior, the NEPRA declared a significant increase in power rates.

The rate resulted in a rise of Rs3.32 per unit, directly affecting the budgets of homes and businesses.

A 20% rise in the country’s tariff

In an effort to secure PKR 3.8 trillion in funding for the ten ex-Wapda energy distribution firms (Discos) for the fiscal year 2024–2025, NEPRA announced in June a nearly 20% hike in the uniform national rate. Discos is anticipated to earn an extra PKR 485 billion as a result of this change, helping the government get an IMF bailout that is planned for July.
