KARACHI: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa informed Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar on Saturday that he was “not interested” in continuing in his role as the top judge.
Speaking on the “Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath” Geo News show, Tarar clarified CJP Isa’s extension of tenure.
The law minister stated that the attorney general was there when the chief justice informed him following the judicial commission meeting that he had no interest in having his term extended.
He said that he had been informed by CJP Isa that there had been talk about his extension.
He claimed, “I told him (CJP) no such thing is happening at all,” and the chief judge thereafter expressed gratitude.
The law minister stated that he did, in fact, advise the chief justice that work was in progress on pension reforms, with one proposal being to raise the retirement age by two years for all sectors.
Then he recalled that there had been a recommendation that judges ought to be taken into account when the administration was thinking about raising the retirement age by two years. He did not, however, say who made the suggestion.
To put this into effect, he stated, a constitutional modification is required, “but this doesn’t mean we necessarily want to grant an extension.”
“People are retired and sent home at the age of sixty in today’s world.
