Imran Khan, the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and his wife Bushra Bibi have been arrested in connection with a new National Accountability Bureau (NAB) investigation into gifts from Toshakhana. According to sources cited by Geo News on Saturday, the couple’s legal issues have not abated.
The development occurred just hours after the former premier and his spouse were cleared of all charges in the iddat case, commonly referred to as the un-Islamic nikah case, by a district and sessions court in Islamabad. This cleared the final roadblock to the couple’s release from custody.
The couple’s requests to have their conviction in the iddat case revoked were accepted by the court. Muhammad Afzal Majoka, the Additional Sessions Judge, declared a short order reserved earlier in the day. When Bushra’s ex-husband, Khawar Maneka, petitioned the court to end the couple’s marriage, a trial court declared their nikah to be fraudulent. As a result, in February of this year, Khan and Bushra were given seven years in prison and fined Rs500,000 apiece.
