ISLAMABAD: According to The News, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senator Irfan Siddiqui disclosed that former chief of army staff General (retd) Raheel Sharif had requested an extension of his term from then-prime minister Nawaz Sharif in exchange for relief in the Panama Papers issue.
“The fact that General Raheel Sharif had requested an extension is no longer a secret. Senator Siddiqui stated, “He had asked for it more than once,” on Saturday on the “Jirga” segment of Geo News.
The senator noted that a few days following the funeral of social worker Abdul Sattar Edhi, a meeting was convened in Raiwind.
The senator claimed that one of their senior leaders had informed him that Raheel Sharif was “delaying in extending my tenure,” and that Nawaz had instead suggested that he take on the role of chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee.
According to Siddiqui, in order to prevent him from being singled out, the former army chief also recommended extending the services of three other leaders. The second recommendation was to extend his term as army chief in exchange for a promotion to field marshal. But Nawaz Sharif rejected his recommendations,” he continued.
The senator claimed that Raheel Sharif offered Nawaz another offer, requesting that he resolve the extension dispute in exchange for receiving assistance in the Panama Leaks case.
“Nawaz Sharif responded by saying that it was more embarrassing than getting indicted in the Panama case. Subsequently, he also got threats of martial law,” the PML-N chief continued.
