PML-N files review petition against SC’s reserved seats ruling

Review petition asks number of questions including whether SIC should be granted the reserved seats

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was found to be qualified for the reserved seats for women and minorities, but the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) filed a review case in the Supreme Court on Monday.

The Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) and its chairman, Hamid Raza, are among the 11 respondents nominated by the ruling party in the plea. The party is pleading with the court to set aside its July 12, 2024, order regarding the reserved seats.

The petitioner argued that some points were left out of the supreme court’s decision.

Among the arguments posed in the review petition was whether the reserve seats should go to the SIC.

It questioned whether political parties that failed to submit party lists by the deadline could still receive reserved seats; whether parties with candidates who failed to file nomination papers by the deadline set by the Pakistani Election Commission could still receive reserved seats; and whether independents could even join a political party that failed to win a single general seat in parliament.

The plea also called into question whether the seats could be kept empty or if the political parties running for them had to split them up.
