Palestinian health sources reported that at least 57 people were killed by Israeli shelling of southern and central portions of the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, as Israeli forces engaged in combat with fighters commanded by Hamas in several locations.
Israel is allegedly intensifying its attacks in Gaza in an attempt to thwart attempts by Arab mediators and the US to broker a ceasefire agreement, according to the militant Palestinian Islamist group Hamas. Israel claims to be attempting to eliminate Hamas fighters.
Five Palestinians were killed in an airstrike on a house in Rafah, a southern border city where Israeli forces have been stationed since May, according to Gaza health officials. They reported that a man, his wife, and two children were killed in Khan Younis, which is nearby.
According to the officials, at least 17 Palestinians were killed and 26 injured during an Israeli attack on a car in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, later on Tuesday.
The incident occurred close to a makeshift camp for displaced families on Attar Street in the Al-Mawasi neighborhood classified as a humanitarian area, according to the health ministry.
The strike, according to the Israeli military, was directed against a top member of the Islamic Jihad organization, a Hamas affiliate.
“We are investigating the reports that the strike caused injuries to multiple civilians,” the military statement read.
