ISLAMABAD: The beleaguered Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) set up a hunger strike camp outside Islamabad’s Parliament House on Tuesday in an attempt to obtain the release of Imran Khan, the founder of the party, and other leaders.
The authorities sealed the central secretariat of the erstwhile ruling party in the federal capital earlier today, one day after Raoof Hasan, the party’s information secretary, and other party employees were apprehended. This represents the party’s second consecutive day of defeats in a short period of time.
Hasan was detained by Islamabad police from the Central Secretariat of the party one day prior for leading a digital media unit and its purported role in disseminating propaganda against Pakistan. The party’s leader, Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, told reporters outside the legislature that the hunger strike will be observed every day until 8 p.m. as a symbolic protest against “injustice,” for the release of the PTI founder, and for the primacy of the legislative branch.
He continued by saying that he informed Speaker of the National Assembly Ayaz Sadiq of his party’s concerns regarding “illegal and unconstitutional actions”.
The politician-turned-attorney claimed that his party spoke up in support of the PTI legislators and their families who were being taken in.
