ISLAMABAD: Following the inauguration of Nobel Peace Prize-winning economist Muhammad Yunus as the head of the nation’s caretaker administration earlier today, Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif on Thursday hailed the recent political shift in Bangladesh as a positive step.
After a month of protests that resulted in over 300 deaths in the worst unrest since the South Asian nation’s founding more than 50 years ago, former Bangladeshi prime minister Sheikh Hasina announced her resignation on August 5 and left the country.
In a nationally televised speech, Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman announced Hasina’s resignation.
The minister of defense saw the developments in Bangladesh as a chance to usher in a new phase of friendly relations between the two countries. He also emphasized the significance of trying to make amends for the past.Speaking to a private television station today, the leader of the PML-N observed that throughout Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year term, India had a considerable impact on Bangladesh and that her removal signaled the end of a “Indian-backed government” in that country.
