Al-Ahli, a Saudi Pro League team, made a £35 million deal for the 28-year-old, but the Bees turned it down last week.
Toney’s “transfer interest” is the reason Brentford excluded him from the team that defeated Crystal Palace 2-1 on Sunday. However, Sutton believes the England striker ought to decide to remain in the Premier League.
Saudi Arabia is a no-no for Sutton at this point in his career, he told the Monday Night Club.
“He possesses all the qualities and has shown himself in the Premier League. His physicality, set-piece [ability], coordination, and all-around play have all improved significantly.
Ivan Toney is at the top of his game right now, and I would prefer to see him stay in the Premier League no matter how much money you have. When I was 35 and older, I would travel to Saudi Arabia.”
Toney served an eight-month sentence for violating Football Association gambling regulations, although he was still a member of the England team that advanced to the European Championship final in the summer.
Sutton continued, “This is such a waste for Ivan Toney.”
“That does not preclude him from traveling to Saudi Arabia and returning to the Premier League, but instead of waiting another season to secure a move, why doesn’t he just do that? He is 28 years old, and his career was booming when he had it.
