Selena Gomez and Candice Bergen both made light of Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance’s now-famous statement about “childless cat ladies” on stage at the Emmys, following Taylor Swift’s open support of Kamala Harris.
Gomez presented the first prize of the night while sharing the stage with her co-stars from Only Murders in the Building, Martin Short and Steve Martin.
“Let me say what an honour it is to work with two guys who are this far away from being childless cat ladies,” laughed the 32-year-old.
Following the trio’s presentation of supporting actor awards, The Bear’s Ebon Moss-Bachrach expressed gratitude to him.
Later, Bergen thought back on her own sitcom Murphy Brown before giving Hacks star Jean Smart the prize for outstanding main actress in a comedy series.
In one iconic scene, vice president Dan Quayle attacked my character after Murphy became pregnant and chose to raise the child alone. I was surrounded by smart and hilarious people, and I had the best scripts to work with,” the 78-year-old remarked.
How far we’ve come, oh. My work here is done, as they say, since a Republican running for vice president today would never criticize a woman for having children.
