Coal Mining Legacy in Shanxi Shanxi has long been the center of coal mining in China. Many workers and families know the risks well. For years, people described the job as a last option for survival. Older miners often say entering a coal pit means risking life for income. Underground tunnels carry constant danger from gas leaks, flooding, and collapsing walls. Many communities once accepted these losses as normal. Over the past decade, China improved mining safety. Fatal accidents dropped, and conditions slowly became more controlled. Many believed the worst period had ended. Deadly Explosion at Liushenyu Mine On 22 May, an explosion hit the Liushenyu coal mine in Shanxi. The blast killed 82 people and injured more than 120 workers. Rescue teams struggled to reach survivors as dust and debris filled the tunnels. The shockwave reached the mine entrance and forced workers to flee in confusion. Authorities have not confirmed the exact cause yet. Early reports suggest methane gas or coal dust may have ignited underground. Survivor Account From the Mine One survivor described panic inside the tunnels. He said the explosion hit suddenly and reduced visibility to almost zero. He ran for several minutes through thick dust. His condition worsened as he moved toward safety. He said fear spread quickly among workers who could not see each other or communicate clearly. Emergency crews later confirmed that survival chances dropped sharply after the blast spread through connected tunnels. Experts Point to Preventable Risks Experts explain that methane buildup is a common hazard in coal mines. Coal dust can also trigger large explosions when exposed to ignition sources. Professor Hong Chen from Jiangnan University said modern mining systems should prevent such disasters. He stressed that safety controls already exist and should have stopped the explosion. He also pointed to human error as a major risk factor. Poor supervision, weak enforcement, and ignored safety rules often increase danger in underground sites. According to specialists, well managed mines can avoid methane explosions through strict monitoring and control systems. Safety Concerns and Industry Pressure The disaster has raised new concerns about enforcement in mining operations. Some workers and former employees say hidden risks still exist in older or poorly monitored tunnels. China continues to depend on coal while also pushing toward cleaner energy sources. This transition creates pressure on both production targets and safety standards. The Shanxi explosion has revived debate over whether safety reforms are strong enough to prevent repeat tragedies.

Rosamund Pike Addresses Theatre Etiquette After Audience Member Texting Incident in West End Show Actor pauses curtain call moment to speak about distraction during emotional scene Rosamund Pike interrupted the usual end-of-show atmosphere at London’s Wyndham’s Theatre after noticing an audience member texting during a powerful moment in her West End performance of Inter Alia. The incident happened on Saturday during the closing stages of the play. Pike, known for Gone Girl, Saltburn, Pride & Prejudice, and Die Another Day, returned to the stage alone after the performance. Instead of a standard curtain call announcement, she spoke directly to the audience about theatre behaviour and focus during live acting. Emotional moment prompts onstage message During her brief speech, Pike explained that she and the cast could see audience behaviour and feel its impact during performance. She said it becomes difficult to stay fully immersed when attention is pulled away in key emotional scenes. She avoided directly identifying the person involved but made it clear that texting had been noticed in a crucial moment of the play. Her tone mixed frustration with understanding, as she suggested the message might have been urgent and even joked that the person could be a doctor dealing with an emergency. Call for respect in live theatre spaces Pike stressed that live theatre depends on shared attention between performers and audience. She reminded attendees that the story being told on stage requires focus and emotional engagement from both sides. Her comments were not aggressive, but firm, as she encouraged people to treat theatre as a space that deserves full presence. She also asked the audience not to record her remarks. Audience reaction and response The moment drew gasps from the crowd, followed by applause after she finished speaking. Some audience members later described the atmosphere as uncomfortable at first, then supportive of Pike’s message. One attendee said they initially expected a routine announcement but were surprised by her direct address about the texting incident. About Inter Alia and Pike’s role Inter Alia is a courtroom focused drama written by Suzie Miller, exploring themes of justice, family pressure, and sexual assault within the legal system. Pike plays Jessica Parks, a Crown Court judge balancing intense professional and personal challenges. Earlier in the year, Pike received recognition for her performance, winning a major theatre award for the role.

A Parallel Inner World: When Daydreaming Becomes Hard to Control What normal daydreaming looks like Daydreaming is a common mental habit. Most people drift into thoughts that are not linked to their current task. Studies suggest a large part of waking thought time is spent in this state. It can support creativity, emotional balance, and stress relief. It also helps people process experiences and handle boredom. When imagination turns into a problem For some people, daydreaming becomes intense and hard to stop. This condition is often called maladaptive daydreaming. It involves long and detailed mental stories that feel almost real. Some individuals spend many hours each day inside these imagined worlds. In severe cases, people may lose up to half of their waking hours in these inner stories. The narratives can continue for years and even feel like ongoing life plots. While the experience may feel comforting at first, it can slowly interfere with normal routines and responsibilities. Why it becomes addictive Experts explain that the issue is not imagination itself but the loss of control over it. The mind begins to return to the same fantasy again and again. Even when people feel it wastes time, they struggle to stop. The process becomes similar to a habit loop. The imagination starts to feel like a safe space, especially for people dealing with loneliness, stress, or social rejection. Over time, the mental escape can become more appealing than real life tasks. Impact on daily life When maladaptive daydreaming takes hold, daily functioning can suffer. People may delay work, avoid social interaction, or lose focus on basic responsibilities. Emotional distress can also appear when they realize how much time has passed inside their thoughts. Some individuals describe the experience as both comforting and frustrating at the same time. They enjoy the stories but regret the time lost. This push and pull makes it difficult to break the cycle. What researchers observe Mental health researchers estimate that a small but significant portion of adults may experience this condition. It is not yet officially classified as a clinical disorder in many diagnostic systems, but it is widely studied. Experts emphasize that imagination itself is healthy. The concern begins when fantasy starts controlling behavior instead of supporting it. Signs it may be becoming harmful Common signs include Spending long hours daydreaming instead of completing tasks Feeling unable to stop even when trying Getting emotionally absorbed in imaginary stories Feeling guilt or frustration after long episodes Preferring imagined scenarios over real interactions Key insight from specialists The main concern is control. Healthy imagination supports life, while maladaptive daydreaming replaces it. When escape becomes the default response to life challenges, it can begin to limit personal growth and daily stability.

Google AI Chatbots and Search Results Face Misinformation Manipulation Risks AI systems are being influenced by fake online signals AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google Search AI features often rely on live web data. When these systems pull information from the internet, they do not only use trained knowledge. They also analyze what appears repeatedly across websites. This creates a weak point. If large amounts of misleading content appear online, the AI may treat it as trustworthy information. How misinformation enters AI answers The problem starts when bad actors publish or repeat false claims across multiple websites. These repeated signals can influence how AI systems interpret credibility. In one experiment, false claims were injected into online spaces. The AI systems then repeated those claims as if they were real facts. This showed how easily large language models can be influenced when web data is not properly filtered. Why this issue matters for users This problem becomes more serious when people use AI for important decisions. These include health advice, money planning, and news updates. Unlike traditional search engines that show multiple links, AI tools often give a single direct answer. This makes users more likely to trust the response without checking other sources. How tech companies are responding Google and other AI developers are now working to reduce this risk. They are improving spam detection systems and updating how AI summaries choose sources. They are also refining ranking signals so that low quality or manipulated content is less likely to influence AI responses. However, the issue is still not fully solved. The bigger shift in search behavior Search technology is changing from a list of links to direct answers. This shift improves speed but reduces user control over information verification. As a result, even small-scale manipulation can have a larger impact on public understanding. Experts warn that users should still cross check important information from reliable sources.

Robots Enter Clothing Manufacturing With a New Method From factories to fashion production Robots already work in car factories, hospitals, and airports. They can assemble complex machines and even assist in surgeries. But clothing production has remained mostly manual. Sewing fabric is still difficult for machines because soft materials shift during handling. Why sewing is hard for robots Fabric is flexible and moves during stitching. Robots struggle to keep two pieces perfectly aligned while working in motion. This makes traditional sewing automation slow and unreliable at scale. Cam Myers, founder of CreateMe, explains that alignment is the main challenge. His company decided to avoid sewing altogether and use a different approach. A new method using adhesive Instead of stitching, CreateMe uses glue to join fabric pieces. A robot applies adhesive, then presses layers together with precision. This process removes the need for needles and thread. The company already uses this system to produce women’s underwear. It plans to start making t shirts soon, with large scale production expected in the near future. Potential impact on global clothing production Today, most garments are made in Asia by low paid workers. Only a small share is produced in Western countries like the United States and the United Kingdom. CreateMe believes automation could shift production closer to home. Some clients want clothing labeled as made in the United States using locally sourced cotton and materials. The company says even moving a small portion of t shirt production back to the United States could reshape the industry. It also believes automation could reduce environmental impact by shortening supply chains. However, this shift could also affect millions of textile workers who rely on garment manufacturing jobs.

Kevin Keegan shares stage four cancer diagnosis Overview of the diagnosis Former England captain and manager Kevin Keegan has revealed that he is living with stage four cancer. Stage four means the illness has spread beyond its original site to other parts of the body. His family first shared news of his condition in January after doctors carried out further tests linked to ongoing abdominal symptoms. Those checks followed a hospital visit. How the diagnosis was found Keegan explained that the condition was discovered during medical scans linked to an operation after a car accident. During those scans, doctors identified cancer and referred him to specialist care. He said he was offered a newer treatment plan with a specialist doctor. The treatment has shown mixed success rates, but Keegan confirmed he continues to receive care and remains in treatment. Public appearance and emotional reception Keegan recently made one of his first public appearances since the diagnosis at the Tyne Theatre and Opera House in Newcastle upon Tyne. He received a standing ovation from fans in a deeply emotional return to the city closely linked with his football legacy and his time at Newcastle United. Football career and legacy As a player, Keegan represented clubs including Scunthorpe United, Liverpool, Hamburger SV, Southampton, and Newcastle United. He later became a manager for Newcastle United, Fulham, the England national team, and Manchester City. He remains one of the most influential figures in Newcastle United history, especially for leading the team during the attacking era often remembered by fans. Connection with Newcastle United today Current Newcastle manager Eddie Howe previously reached out to Keegan after taking charge in 2021 to understand the club culture and expectations. Keegan has expressed a wish to return to St James Park to say a proper goodbye, although he has not attended a match there since 2008. The club continues to support him and has sent public messages of care and encouragement, saying he will always be welcome at the stadium. Personal reflections Keegan has said he does not feel the need for a statue outside the stadium. He stated that how fans treat him matters more than any physical tribute. He remains positive about his situation and continues to focus on treatment and time with his family.

Record Swim at Controversial Event Kristian Gkolomeev from Greece delivered the fastest time ever recorded in the 50m freestyle, clocking 20.81 seconds in Las Vegas. His swim beat the official world best of 20.88 seconds set by Cameron McEvoy. Despite the result, sporting authorities will not recognise the time. The event does not follow international anti doping rules and allows performance enhancing drugs. Why the Result Is Not Official Global bodies such as the International Olympic Committee and the World Anti Doping Agency reject the competition. Athletes at the event are allowed to use substances banned in official sport. World Aquatics also criticised the competition, calling it a spectacle built on shortcuts. Officials argue that results from this setting cannot count as official records. Conditions and Rewards at the Event Gkolomeev competed using a polyurethane suit, which is not allowed in sanctioned races. Organisers rewarded him with 250 thousand dollars for winning and added a 1 million dollar bonus for the unofficial record. He said the result changed his life and would support his family. He also indicated he plans to return next year to attempt another record. Other Performances at the Enhanced Games Fred Kerley from the United States won the 100m sprint in 9.97 seconds. He did not match his personal best of 9.76 seconds. British swimmer Ben Proud won the 50m butterfly in 22.32 seconds. His time was close to the world record but did not surpass it. He expressed frustration at missing a record. Emily Barclay from Britain won the women 50m freestyle in 24.09 seconds. This was slower than the official world record. Strongman athlete Hafthor Bjornsson also competed but did not break his 510 kilogram deadlift record. Debate Around Drug Use in Sport The Enhanced Games allows substances approved for medical use in the United States, including testosterone and growth hormones. These are banned in traditional sport. Organisers say controlled enhancement is safer and more transparent than hidden doping. Critics argue it threatens fair competition and undermines sport integrity. Public Reaction and Attendance The event took place in front of about 2500 invited spectators. Tickets were not sold to the general public. Many sports authorities publicly criticised athletes who took part. Some organisations may impose bans on competitors in future events.

US Hotels Fear Weak World Cup Tourism as Bookings Fall Short Tourism expectations fail to match reality US hotels are worried the upcoming World Cup will not deliver the expected tourism boost. Many host cities are reporting lower-than-expected bookings, raising doubts about the event’s economic impact. A report from the American Hotel & Lodging Association shows demand is falling behind forecasts across most locations. The group represents more than 32,000 hotel properties and a large share of franchised hotels in the United States. Conflict between booking data and ticket sales The association says hotel demand does not match FIFA’s claim that over five million tickets have already been sold. It warns that the expected financial gains from the tournament could be lower than projected. Accusations over hotel room block bookings The report also criticizes FIFA for reserving large numbers of hotel rooms in advance. According to the association, this created artificial demand and pushed prices higher in early stages of booking. Later, FIFA cancelled a significant portion of those reservations. Hotel operators say this left gaps in availability and disrupted normal pricing patterns. FIFA has rejected these claims and does not agree with the criticism. Other factors behind weak demand Hotels say several issues are discouraging visitors. High ticket prices for matches are one concern. Expensive local transport and taxes are also adding pressure. Some operators also point to political tensions as another reason international travel interest has slowed. Economic outlook remains uncertain With lower bookings and mixed signals from ticket sales, the hospitality sector is now unsure about the World Cup’s overall economic benefit. Many hotels are preparing for weaker-than-expected revenue during the tournament period.

The midwife's notes were short and to the point. The three letters - "FOH" - that she had written on a whiteboard next to names of heavily pregnant women were not there to alert colleagues to women having a specific medical condition or requiring a certain type of care. Instead, they were an acronym for a three-word offensive statement signalling they wanted the women to leave the maternity unit run by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH). The "F", a swear word. The "O", standing for "OFF". The "H", short for "HOME". The acronym was described in a 2018 resignation letter from another member of staff, now seen by BBC Panorama, raising concerns about attitudes within the unit. In the same letter, another midwife was reported to have advised colleagues to get pregnant women, who had arrived worried they were going into labour, to go home with the advice: "Don't be too kind, she'll keep coming back." The Nottingham trust is currently at the centre of the largest maternity inquiry in the history of the NHS - looking at care provided to about 2,500 families between 2012 and 2025. The inquiry has been investigating stillbirths, neonatal deaths, maternal deaths, and injured babies and mothers at NUH, which runs City Hospital and Queen's Medical Centre.

Overview of Leaked Messages The UK government has released more than one thousand pages of documents linked to the appointment of Lord Mandelson as ambassador to the United States. The papers include private exchanges between Lord Mandelson and senior ministers. These messages cover policy discussion, political advice, and sharp views on the leadership and operations inside government. Criticism of Downing Street Operations In messages sent in May 2025, Lord Mandelson told then Cabinet Office minister Pat McFadden that he felt leadership inside government lacked energy and direction. He said Keir Starmer appeared to lack drive, and he also included similar criticism of the wider Cabinet. Later messages suggest Mandelson believed No 10 staff were not working in a coordinated way. He argued that advisers were capable but not operating as a unified team. He also said they did not clearly understand the prime minister’s priorities. He added that the centre of government felt under strain and needed a major reset to improve confidence and performance. Views on Leadership Direction In further exchanges during July 2025, Mandelson suggested that policy decisions showed inconsistency. He pointed to changes in positions on immigration, welfare, and Gaza as examples. He described what he saw as shifting strategy, saying there was a pattern of moving forward and then stepping back on key decisions. He also said there was a growing approach of allowing the prime minister to lead more freely, which he interpreted as a change in internal control. Concerns Raised About Political Discussions Messages from Pat McFadden also included comments about internal political conversations. He described repeated discussions about tax choices and welfare spending. He suggested that some debates were focused more on funding outcomes than broader policy design. Supporters of McFadden later clarified that these remarks were made before he took responsibility for the benefits system, while he was working in the Cabinet Office. A spokesperson for the Work and Pensions Secretary said all requested messages were fully provided under official requirements. Conclusion The released documents show private political conversations at senior levels of government. They highlight internal concerns about coordination, leadership style, and policy direction. The exchanges also show differing views among ministers about how government decisions are being made and communicated.
