Many people thought Delhi’s stance on the Palestine issue shifted when it declared solidarity with Israel after the Hamas attack, calling it a “major policy shift.”
Arindam Bagchi, a spokesman for the external affairs ministry, clarified that India views the Hamas attack as “a terrorist attack” and reaffirmed its commitment to its long-standing policy of supporting the creation of a “sovereign, independent, and viable state of Palestine.”
However, this impression was reinforced when India was the only country in the Global South to vote against a ceasefire in Gaza at the UN General Assembly.
According to the health ministry, the year-long confrontation between Israel and Hamas has resulted in at least 43,314 deaths and 102,019 injuries.
