    # Venezuela Earthquake Sparks Panic as Hundreds Face Devastation A powerful Venezuela earthquake caused widespread panic on Wednesday evening as two strong tremors struck the country within seconds of each other. The back to back quakes damaged buildings, forced residents into the streets, and left communities struggling to assess the full scale of the disaster. Authorities have confirmed that more than 160 people lost their lives, while hundreds suffered injuries. Rescue teams continue searching through damaged buildings as officials warn that the final death toll could rise significantly. ## Residents Rush Into the Streets Many residents in Caracas feared for their lives when the ground suddenly began shaking. Verónica, a resident of the capital city, was celebrating a national holiday with her mother when the earthquakes struck. She described the terrifying experience, saying she believed the building around her would collapse at any moment. Like thousands of others, she quickly evacuated and joined crowds gathering in the streets. Many people remained outdoors for hours as they feared additional aftershocks. Families desperately searched for information about relatives and friends amid communication disruptions. ## Two Powerful Earthquakes Strike Within Minutes The first earthquake measured 7.2 in magnitude and struck around 6:04 PM local time. Less than a minute later, a second and even stronger 7.5 magnitude earthquake followed. The powerful tremors shook large parts of northern Venezuela. Areas near Caracas and La Guaira experienced some of the strongest shaking. The earthquakes damaged homes, businesses, roads, and public infrastructure. Emergency services immediately launched rescue operations in the worst affected regions. ## Rescue Efforts Continue Rescue workers are digging through piles of debris in search of survivors. Several buildings collapsed completely, trapping people underneath the rubble. Videos shared online show damaged streets filled with debris. In some areas, trapped residents could be heard calling for help as rescue teams worked to reach them. Emergency crews continue operating around the clock despite difficult conditions. ## Power and Internet Outages Slow Response Power outages and internet disruptions have complicated rescue and recovery efforts. Several communities remain difficult to reach, making it challenging for authorities to gather accurate information. Officials believe some of the hardest hit areas have not yet reported the full extent of the damage. As communication networks recover, authorities expect a clearer picture of the disaster to emerge. ## Family Homes Destroyed For many survivors, the disaster has changed their lives forever. Verónica later confirmed that she and her mother survived the earthquakes. However, she believes they have lost their home. According to her account, the building suffered severe structural damage, with major cracks appearing throughout the property. As thousands of Venezuelans face uncertainty, rescue operations continue and communities begin the long process of recovery after one of the country's most devastating earthquakes in recent years.

Kunal Shah Takes Charge of WhatsApp as Meta Bets on Payments and AI Growth From Indian Startup Founder to Global Tech Leader Kunal Shah, the founder of Indian fintech company Cred, has been appointed as the new head of WhatsApp. The move places him at the center of one of the world's largest digital platforms, with more than three billion users worldwide. For years, Shah was well known in India's startup and investment community. However, his new role at WhatsApp has brought him international attention. Meta's decision comes after its reported $900 million investment in Cred and reflects the company's ambition to expand WhatsApp beyond messaging. Meta aims to strengthen WhatsApp's position in digital payments, business services, and artificial intelligence. Shah's experience in building consumer-focused technology products made him a strong choice for the role. Building a Reputation in India's Startup Ecosystem Kunal Shah first gained recognition in 2010 when he co-founded FreeCharge. The platform allowed users to recharge mobile phones and quickly became popular as India's digital economy started to grow. The company achieved rapid success and attracted significant investor interest. In 2015, e-commerce company Snapdeal acquired FreeCharge in one of India's biggest startup deals at the time. Following the acquisition, Shah shifted his focus toward investing in emerging technology companies. He worked closely with startup founders and became a respected mentor within the entrepreneurial community. A Trusted Adviser to Startup Founders After leaving FreeCharge, Shah spent several years advising and investing in promising startups. During this period, he also collaborated with renowned organizations such as Y Combinator and Sequoia Capital. These experiences helped him build strong relationships across the technology sector. As India's startup ecosystem expanded, Shah became known for sharing insights on entrepreneurship, innovation, and business growth. His podcasts, interviews, and social media posts attracted a large audience. He often discussed topics such as trust, incentives, wealth creation, artificial intelligence, and human behavior. An Unconventional Journey to Success Unlike many leading technology entrepreneurs, Shah did not attend a prestigious engineering or management institution. He studied philosophy while living in Mumbai and followed a different path to success. According to stories shared by fellow entrepreneurs, Shah selected philosophy partly because the class schedule allowed him to continue working after his family's business faced financial difficulties. While studying, he took on various jobs to support himself. Those experiences shaped his understanding of business and eventually inspired him to launch FreeCharge. How Cred Changed the Fintech Market In 2018, Shah founded Cred, a fintech company designed to reward users for paying their credit card bills on time. The concept focused on encouraging responsible financial behavior through incentives and rewards. The platform quickly attracted users and investors. Over time, Cred expanded its services into lending, insurance, commerce, and wealth management. Shah frequently explained that the company's foundation was built on trust and incentives. This philosophy helped Cred stand out in India's highly competitive fintech industry. What Shah's Appointment Means for WhatsApp As WhatsApp enters a new phase of growth, Shah faces the challenge of turning the platform into more than just a messaging service. Meta wants to expand digital payments, support businesses, and introduce new AI-powered features. His track record of building innovative financial products and understanding consumer behavior could play a major role in shaping WhatsApp's future strategy. With billions of users and growing competition in the technology sector, all eyes will now be on Kunal Shah as he leads one of the world's most influential communication platforms.

    # Who Could Be the UK's Next Chancellor? With Sir Keir Starmer stepping down, many political observers expect Andy Burnham to become the next UK prime minister. If Burnham takes office, attention will quickly turn to one of the most important positions in government: the chancellor. The next chancellor will inherit a challenging economic situation. Rising public debt, weak economic growth, welfare reform pressures, increased defence spending, and global uncertainty are all on the agenda. As a result, the choice could have a direct impact on businesses, investors, and households across the UK. ## Wes Streeting Emerges as the Leading Contender Many bookmakers currently see Wes Streeting as the frontrunner for the chancellor role. Streeting previously competed for the Labour leadership but later backed Burnham. His support has led to speculation that he could be rewarded with one of the most powerful jobs in government. However, not everyone supports that idea. Economist Lord Jim O'Neill has suggested that the role should go to the most qualified candidate rather than someone seeking recognition for political loyalty. Although Burnham and Streeting work within the same party, they often differ on economic priorities. Burnham generally supports higher public spending, while Streeting is viewed as more cautious on government finances. Economic analysts describe Streeting as relatively friendly to business and growth. Supporters believe he could reassure financial markets. Critics, however, argue that his long term political ambitions could create challenges in government. ## Ed Miliband Remains a Strong Alternative Another name frequently mentioned is Ed Miliband. The former Labour leader is considered politically closer to Burnham. Many experts believe that strong alignment between the prime minister and chancellor helps create stable economic policy. Miliband brings significant experience to the table. Supporters argue that he has the knowledge and authority needed to guide the economy through difficult times. Some economists believe he could win market confidence by presenting a clear and consistent financial strategy. Others remain concerned about his economic approach. ## Concerns Over Energy Policy Critics often link Miliband's strong support for net zero policies to Britain's relatively high energy costs. Because of this perception, some analysts fear financial markets could react cautiously if he became chancellor. Investors typically look for policies that support stable growth while keeping inflation under control. Miliband has also faced criticism from parts of the trade union movement. Opponents argue that restrictions on new oil and gas projects in the North Sea could limit job creation and investment opportunities. ## Major Challenges Await the Next Chancellor Regardless of who secures the position, the next chancellor will face a difficult task. The UK economy continues to struggle with slow growth and high government borrowing. At the same time, public services require additional funding, while defence spending demands continue to increase. Global tensions and uncertainty in international markets add further pressure. The next chancellor will need to balance economic growth, public spending, and financial stability while maintaining confidence among businesses and investors. ## Final Thoughts The race to become the UK's next chancellor is already attracting significant attention. Wes Streeting and Ed Miliband currently lead the discussion, but the final decision will likely depend on Andy Burnham's broader economic vision. Whoever takes the role will play a crucial part in shaping the UK's financial future during a period of significant economic and political change.

    # EU Entry/Exit System Sparks Concerns Over Summer Travel Delays Travellers heading to Europe this summer may experience longer waiting times at airports because of the European Union's new Entry/Exit System (EES). The digital border control program has now become fully operational across the Schengen Area and is changing the way non-EU visitors enter and leave participating countries. Many travel experts have warned that the new checks could create delays during peak holiday periods. As millions of people travel across Europe, airports are preparing for increased passenger processing times. ## What Is the EU Entry/Exit System? The EU Entry/Exit System is a digital border management program designed to replace traditional passport stamping. Instead of receiving a manual stamp, travellers now have their entry and exit information recorded electronically. The system applies to non-EU citizens entering the Schengen Area. This includes UK travellers visiting popular destinations such as France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, and other participating countries. Officials introduced the system to improve border security and track the movement of visitors more accurately. ## What Information Must Travellers Provide? Under the new rules, travellers must complete biometric registration when entering the Schengen Area for the first time. This process includes: * A passport scan * Fingerprint registration * A digital facial photograph Most passengers complete these checks at automated kiosks located at airports. However, border officers may process some travellers manually. Children under 12 years old are generally exempt from fingerprint collection. Once travellers leave the Schengen Area, authorities verify the stored information to confirm their departure. ## Why Are Airport Delays Expected? The biometric registration process takes longer than a standard passport check. As a result, airport authorities expect increased waiting times, especially during busy travel periods. Since the rollout began last year, several airports have reported smooth operations. However, others have experienced significant delays during peak hours. Travel industry representatives believe some airports could face lengthy queues when passenger numbers rise sharply. In certain cases, travellers may wait several hours before clearing border control. ## What Should Travellers Do Before Flying? Passengers travelling to Europe should arrive at airports earlier than usual and allow extra time for border procedures. Checking airline guidance before departure can also help travellers prepare for any additional requirements. Furthermore, travellers should keep passports ready and follow airport instructions to speed up the registration process. Although the new system aims to strengthen security and modernize border management, it may take time before airports fully adjust to the additional checks. ## Outlook for Summer Travel The EU Entry/Exit System marks a major change in European border control procedures. While authorities expect the system to improve efficiency in the long term, travellers could experience delays during the busy summer season. For now, planning ahead and allowing extra time at airports remains the best way to avoid unnecessary stress and travel disruptions.

Dettol Apologises After China Advertisement Backlash Over Gender Portrayal 1. What the Advertisement Showed British hygiene brand Dettol faced criticism after releasing a long promotional video in China. The ad was styled like a short drama and promoted a disinfectant product. In the storyline, a man searches for a partner he describes as “clean” and “not connected to other men.” Later, the narrative shifts when his girlfriend challenges his thinking and ends the relationship. The brand product is then linked to the idea of removing “toxic men,” compared in the video to bacteria. 2. Why It Triggered Backlash The campaign quickly spread across Chinese social media, where many viewers reacted negatively. Some users said the message objectified women and reinforced harmful ideas about purity and relationships. Others argued the comparison between human relationships and bacteria was inappropriate and offensive. Calls for a boycott of Dettol products also appeared online. The discussion took place mainly on platforms similar to X in China, where users described the advertisement as confusing and poorly executed. 3. Dettol’s Response Dettol issued an apology after the backlash grew. The company said the intention was to challenge sexist behavior, but the message was misunderstood and misrepresented once clips circulated online. The brand admitted responsibility for weaknesses in how the content was created and reviewed. It also said it would improve its internal approval process for future campaigns. Dettol added that its core mission is to support hygiene and safety, but also to respect dignity and equality for all people. The company is owned by Reckitt, which has previously faced scrutiny in China over similar advertising content. 4. Wider Context and Previous Issues This is not the first time Dettol has faced criticism in the Chinese market. A previous advertisement also drew backlash for its portrayal of women and cleanliness, which led to public complaints online. Marketing experts noted that the latest campaign highlights the risks brands face when using sensitive social themes in advertising, especially when messaging can be interpreted in different ways across cultures.

    # Scotland Ready for Historic World Cup Battle Against Brazil Scotland are preparing for one of the biggest matches in their football history as they get ready to face Brazil in a crucial World Cup group stage clash in Miami. The match could decide whether Steve Clarke's side reaches the knockout rounds for the first time ever. The challenge is huge. Brazil remain one of the most successful teams in world football. However, Scotland believe they have a real chance to achieve something special. ## Scotland's Long History Against Brazil Scotland first played Brazil 60 years ago in 1966. At that time, Brazil were the reigning world champions and featured legendary players such as Pele, Jairzinho, Gerson, and Amarildo. Despite facing one of the strongest teams in football history, Scotland made an impressive start. Stevie Chalmers scored after just one minute, and the match ended in a 1-1 draw. Scottish fans would gladly accept a similar result this time around. A point against Brazil could prove vital in their quest to progress. ## Painful Memories Still Remain Matches against Brazil have often brought heartbreak for Scotland. One of the most painful moments came at the 1998 World Cup in France. Scotland were level at 1-1 before a cruel own goal from Tom Boyd helped Brazil secure a 2-1 victory. Another unforgettable moment arrived during the 1974 World Cup. Scotland held Brazil to a goalless draw, but Billy Bremner missed a golden opportunity from close range. Scotland eventually exited the tournament despite remaining unbeaten. Those memories continue to motivate the current squad as they prepare for another major encounter. ## Knockout Stage Dream Within Reach Unlike previous tournaments, Scotland enter this match knowing they still have several routes to qualification. A victory would guarantee a famous place in the knockout rounds. A draw could also be enough depending on other results across the groups. Even a narrow defeat may not end Scotland's hopes. Goal difference and results elsewhere could still work in their favour. Because of this, every goal and every moment could have a major impact on their World Cup journey. ## Steve Clarke's Team Ready for the Challenge Steve Clarke has built a disciplined and determined Scotland side. His players have shown resilience throughout the tournament and remain fully focused on the task ahead. The hot and humid conditions in Miami will test both teams. However, Scotland know that opportunities like this rarely come around. The squad understands the significance of the occasion. A strong performance against Brazil could create one of the greatest moments in Scottish football history. ## A Night That Could Define a Generation Scotland's supporters have waited decades to see their team reach the knockout stages of a World Cup. Now they stand just one match away from making history. Brazil remain favourites, but Scotland have already shown they can compete at the highest level. As the teams prepare to step onto the field in Miami, Scottish fans around the world will hope their players can deliver a performance that lives long in the memory. The dream is alive, and Scotland have everything to play for.

    # Scotland Fans Hope for Historic World Cup Progress Against Brazil Thousands of Scotland supporters are eagerly awaiting their team's crucial World Cup group stage match against Brazil. The game could determine whether Scotland reaches the knockout rounds of the tournament for the first time in its history. Fans from across Scotland have travelled to Miami to support the national team, while many more will watch from home. Excitement continues to grow as Scotland stands on the verge of a historic achievement. ## Tartan Army Believes History Is Within Reach The atmosphere in Miami has been electric as members of the Tartan Army gather ahead of the high stakes encounter. Many supporters believe this could be a landmark moment for Scottish football. Stevie Parker, who travelled from Larbert, said confidence among fans remains high. He believes Scotland has a strong chance of getting the result needed to move forward in the competition. According to supporters, reaching the knockout stage would mark one of the greatest moments in the country's football history. ## Fans Calculate Scotland's Qualification Chances While celebrations have filled the streets of Miami, many supporters continue to keep a close eye on qualification scenarios. Brian Guthrie from Inverness admitted he has been tracking every possible outcome. He remains optimistic about Scotland's chances and hopes the team can secure a place in the next round. Many fans are already dreaming of following Scotland to future matches if qualification becomes official. ## Opportunity to Rewrite World Cup History For some supporters, the Brazil match carries special emotional significance. Ewen MacDonald from Machrihanish celebrated his birthday in Miami just days before the game. He remembers Scotland's disappointing exit from the 1998 World Cup and hopes this tournament will produce a different outcome. Fans believe the current squad has the talent and determination needed to create a new chapter in Scottish football history. ## Scotland's Knockout Stage Dream Scotland enters the match knowing that a win or draw against five time world champions Brazil would put the team in a strong position to reach the knockout rounds. The possibility of advancing beyond the group stage has created excitement among supporters both in Miami and across Scotland. As kickoff approaches, fans remain hopeful that the national team can deliver a memorable performance and achieve a historic World Cup milestone.

    # England Assess Reece James and Declan Rice Ahead of Panama World Cup Match ## Midfield and Defensive Concerns for England England's coaching staff are closely monitoring the fitness of Reece James and Declan Rice before their final World Cup group stage fixture against Panama on Saturday. Both players picked up fitness concerns following England's goalless draw against Ghana. Medical staff will continue evaluating their conditions before making a final decision on their availability. ## Rice Dealing With Calf and Hamstring Issues Declan Rice left Boston Stadium with heavy strapping on his left calf after Tuesday's match. While the injury raised concerns among supporters, sources suggest there is no major threat to his long term participation in the tournament. The England midfielder had already been managing a hamstring problem. During the earlier match against Croatia, he experienced nerve pain linked to that issue and was substituted as a precaution. England's medical team plans to assess Rice's recovery over the coming days. Coaches will then determine whether it is worth risking him against Panama or allowing additional time for recovery. ## Reece James Also Under Observation Reece James completed the full 90 minutes against Ghana, but the defender will also undergo further medical checks. The Chelsea captain has faced several injury setbacks throughout his career. Because of that history, England's staff remain cautious about managing his workload during the tournament. Although James showed no obvious signs of discomfort during the match, coaches want to ensure he remains fully fit for the knockout stages. ## England Prioritising Player Fitness With qualification hopes still in their hands, England's management team must balance immediate results with the long term fitness of key players. Rice remains one of the team's most important midfielders, while James provides valuable experience and defensive strength. Any decision regarding their involvement against Panama will depend on medical assessments and recovery progress. Supporters are expected to receive an official update later this week as England continue preparations for their crucial World Cup encounter. ## What Happens Next? England's medical staff will closely monitor both players over the next 24 to 48 hours. If their recovery progresses well, they could feature against Panama. However, the coaching staff may choose a cautious approach to avoid aggravating any injuries before the knockout rounds begin. The coming days will be important as England look to secure a positive result while keeping their squad healthy for the challenges ahead.

A British technology firm has secured its largest contract yet, signing a £47.3 million deal with Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

Filtronic, based in Sedgefield, County Durham, will provide advanced gallium nitride E band technology for use in satellite communications. The technology is set to support SpaceX’s Starlink satellite network.

The company operates manufacturing facilities in County Durham and the United States, along with three engineering centres across the UK. Filtronic said its technology would play a “vital role” in boosting the performance and reliability of Starlink.

Chief Executive Nat Edington called the contract a “landmark” for the company, setting a new commercial record.

This contract follows earlier collaborations with SpaceX. Filtronic first formed a strategic partnership in April 2024 and added a £16.8 million contract in February.

Mike Nicholls, Vice President of Engineering at Starlink, said the technology would enhance both the system and the user experience. “We’re excited to enter this next phase with Filtronic,” he added.

The deal highlights the growing role of UK technology firms in the global space industry and reflects rising demand for high performance satellite communication solutions.

# Andy Burnham Could Become UK Prime Minister Within Weeks Under Labour Leadership Timetable Labour has announced a fast-track schedule to elect its next leader following Sir Keir Starmer's resignation. The timetable could allow Andy Burnham to become both Labour leader and prime minister as early as 17 July. Burnham currently appears to be the strongest candidate in the race. If no other Labour MP secures enough support to challenge him, he could take over leadership within a matter of weeks. ## Labour Unveils Leadership Election Schedule Labour's governing body has outlined the process for selecting the party's next leader. Candidates can begin collecting MP nominations on 9 July and must reach the required threshold by 15 July. Those who qualify must then secure support from affiliated organizations, including trade unions, by 16 July. If only one candidate meets all requirements, Labour will announce the new leader at a special party conference on 17 July. Following that announcement, the King would formally appoint the new prime minister. ## Membership Vote Possible if More Candidates Enter The situation could change if additional candidates enter the contest and secure enough backing. In that case, Labour members and affiliated supporters would vote between 6 August and 27 August. The party would then announce the final result on 29 August. At present, Burnham remains the only confirmed candidate, which strengthens the possibility of an early leadership transition. ## Burnham Gains Strong Support Across Labour Burnham declared his intention to run shortly after Sir Keir stepped down on Monday. Several prominent Labour figures have already endorsed his campaign. Supporters include Chancellor Rachel Reeves, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson, and Health Secretary James Murray. Former Health Secretary Wes Streeting also decided not to run and instead backed Burnham's bid for the leadership. Meanwhile, Darren Jones has ruled out entering the race. Former Armed Forces minister Al Carns has not yet confirmed whether he plans to stand. Political observers believe Burnham may attract enough nominations to prevent any rival candidate from reaching the required threshold. ## Starmer Seeks Smooth Transfer of Power Although Sir Keir Starmer has announced his resignation, he will remain prime minister until Labour elects a new leader. He has emphasized the importance of an orderly transition and has authorized civil servants to meet potential leadership candidates. These meetings aim to help candidates prepare for the responsibilities of government. Government officials have rejected suggestions that the administration has become ineffective during the transition period. They insist ministers continue to carry out their duties while the leadership contest unfolds. ## What Happens Next? The coming weeks will determine whether Burnham faces competition or secures an uncontested victory. If no challenger emerges, Labour could install a new leader and prime minister on 17 July. If the race becomes contested, party members will have the final say in August. For now, Burnham remains the clear favorite to lead Labour into its next chapter.

# UK Heatwave Breaks Records as Temperatures Reach 36.7°C The United Kingdom experienced its hottest day of 2026 on Thursday as temperatures climbed to 36.7°C in Somerset. Weather experts have also warned that the country could see its warmest June night ever, with overnight temperatures expected to remain unusually high. According to provisional weather data, Merryfield in Somerset recorded the highest temperature of the day. The figure surpassed previous records and marked the hottest day of June this year. ## Extreme Heat Warning Remains in Effect Authorities have kept a rare red extreme heat warning in place across parts of England and Wales. The alert covers southern, central, and western regions and highlights serious risks linked to prolonged high temperatures. Officials extended the warning for a third consecutive day, the first time such an extension has occurred. Millions of people in London and southeastern England remain affected by the alert. ## Warm Nights Add to Heatwave Challenges The heatwave has created difficult conditions across the country. Many residents struggled to sleep as temperatures stayed exceptionally high overnight. Wednesday night became the warmest June night on record in the UK after temperatures in Cardiff remained above 23.5°C. The previous June record stood at 22.7°C and had been in place since 1976. Forecasters believe Thursday night could challenge or even surpass that record as hot air continues to dominate much of the country. ## Schools, Water Restrictions and Travel Disruption The ongoing heatwave has already caused widespread disruption. Several schools closed because of the extreme conditions, while water companies introduced hosepipe restrictions for some customers in Kent. Transport services also faced delays and disruptions as infrastructure struggled to cope with the intense heat. ## Rain and Thunderstorms Expected Weather conditions are expected to change gradually.
