On Tuesday, England takes on Slovenia in the hopes of winning and taking first place in Group C, which will guarantee their advancement to the following round.
The team led by Gareth Southgate has struggled for the most of the first two games; following an initial 1-0 victory against Serbia, they have drawn 1-1 with Denmark in a dismal display.
Some have speculated that England’s lack of a left-footed full-back, a position Shaw has made his own when fit, is one of the reasons for the team’s lackluster tournament debut.
Since then, the Manchester United left-back has been out due to a hamstring injury.
When announcing his original 33-man training squad, Southgate acknowledged Shaw was a “long shot” and somewhat of a “wild card,” but he eventually made the final team thanks to consistent improvement.
“I think you can take one gamble and that’s the gamble that we’ve got enough evidence to believe it can pay off,” he stated earlier in the month.
“And also, positionally, because of what he brings with his experience, the fact he’s a left-footer who can drive forward and give us a different attacking option as well, then it is a situation we wanted to explore.”
