Former prime minister and leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Begum Khaleda Zia, has thanked the public and student protestors for overthrowing Sheikh Hasina Wazed of the Awami League’s 15-year administration. She also asked them to put aside their desire for retribution.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told The Daily Star over the phone that she has also encouraged everyone to exercise patience.
“It was a while before I saw her. She was somewhat worn out, but her mental state seemed sound,” Fakhrul remarked.
“The BNP chairperson has received her passport,” he continued. She had been having trouble accessing it for days due to government restrictions.
