How Scientists Measured Sting Pain One of the most well-known experts in this field is Justin Schmidt. He created the “Schmidt Sting Pain Index” by deliberately getting stung by dozens of insects. He ranked each sting from level 1 to level 4, based on how painful it felt. Level 1 includes mild stings. These are irritating but manageable. Level 2 brings stronger pain, often sharp and burning. The Dasymutilla klugii, also known as a velvet ant, delivers a long-lasting sting that feels like burning oil on the skin. Some wasps, including aggressive species, can cause intense reactions that feel explosive and disorienting. Even common insects like honey wasps can produce sharp, spicy pain. While these are less severe, they still rank high on the pain scale. Why These Stings Hurt So Much The pain comes from venom designed to affect the nervous system. These chemicals trigger pain receptors and cause inflammation. In some cases, they also interfere with muscle control or nerve signals. Each species has evolved its own venom mix. That’s why the sensation varies so much. Some feel like burns, others like electric shocks, and some combine both. Final Thoughts The title of “most painful sting” often goes to the bullet ant. However, pain is subjective. Some people may find shorter, sharper stings more unbearable than long-lasting ones. What’s clear is that nature has developed some powerful defense systems. The distance could be greater than the previous record of Apollo 13 from 1970. It will all depend on how the mission is oriented. Astronauts share stunning views of Earth The view from the ship of Earth was described by Commander Reid Wiseman as "unforgettable". Crew members could view the whole planet, from pole to pole. The moment, he said, left the four astronauts speechless. This was one of most memorable experiences on the mission. Safety Measures and emergency Options The mission allows emergency returns even after TLI burning. The controllers have the ability to redirect the spacecraft if necessary. A quick return in the first 36-hours is possible. It may then be possible to return and continue the orbit around the Moon. NASA has run simulations in order to be prepared for any scenario. Tribute at Sea for Lives Lost At the port of Arguineguín in southern Gran Canaria, the Pope paid tribute to migrants who died during their journeys. He placed a wreath of flowers into the sea and prayed in silence. His message focused on remembering those who disappeared without any trace during Atlantic crossings. Dangerous Journey Across the Atlantic Data from the UNHCR shows that arrivals to Spain by sea have decreased this year. This decline is partly linked to stronger patrols along West African waters supported by European funding. Even with fewer arrivals, many migrants continue to attempt the journey. Many still lose their lives at sea. Survivor Story from The Gambia One survivor, Bakary Jaiju from The Gambia, shared his experience of crossing the Atlantic at age 19. He traveled in a wooden boat with around 160 people including women and children. He described a journey lasting seven days with very limited food and water. Fear was constant as passengers risked falling into the sea. Jaiju said he left his family behind because he wanted to improve their living conditions, even if it meant risking his life. Rescue and Life After Arrival When the boat ran out of fuel near El Hierro, Spanish rescue teams found and saved the passengers. After arrival, Jaiju spent three difficult months in a migrant camp. Later, he joined a support program in Tenerife to learn Spanish and work toward legal residence. A local parish priest known as Padre Pepe supports migrants through community programs that help them adjust and rebuild their lives.
