Prior to Sunday’s north London derby at Tottenham, the Spaniard, whose contract was scheduled to expire at the end of the season, has now committed to a deal that will last until 2027.
“I feel extremely proud, very excited and am looking forward to what is coming next,” said Arteta.
“I consider myself incredibly fortunate to work with wonderful people every day and to have the goals we do here.” I am filled with inspiration, challenge, support, and a strong desire to go beyond our current collaborative endeavors.”
In December 2019, the Gunners named Arteta, a fellow countryman Unai Emery’s coach at Manchester City under Pep Guardiola, their new manager.
At the end of the 2019–2020 season, he managed Arsenal to victory in the FA Cup final, earning his first major title.
In the last two seasons, Arsenal has trailed Manchester City in the Premier League standings. The 42-year-old is hoping to lead the team to its first top-flight championship since 2003–04.
Josh Kroenke, co-chairman of Arsenal, continued, “Mikel is a dynamic and passionate manager, who is relentless in the pursuit of excellence.”
Since taking over as head coach of Arsenal in December 2019, he has demonstrated a thorough understanding of the club’s values.
