ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice Aamer Farooq of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) noted on Monday that efforts to thwart campaigns against judges must be handled by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), and Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra).
The statement was made as legal action was taken against those behind the campaign of defamation against Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri by a full court bench led by the top justice of the Indian High Court.
The entire court bench consists of Justices Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, Babar Sattar, Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan, Arbab Muhammad Tahir, and Saman Rafat Imtiaz.
The authenticity of Justice Jahangiri’s degree has come under scrutiny in the social media campaign, with some calling it “invalid”.
It should be recalled that Jahangiri was a member of the IHC judges’ group. On March 25, the group wrote to Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa requesting the calling of the judicial convention to address the issue of purported interference by intelligence agents in judicial functions or “intimidation” of judges in a way that jeopardized the judiciary’s independence.
The chief justice, who also serves as the chairman of the SJC, received a letter from the six IHC judges: Justices Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, Babar Sattar, Arbab Muhammad Tahir, Jahangiri, Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan, and Saman Rifat Imtiaz.
