These ingredients keep cakes, bread, and ice cream moist, even after weeks. They are found in thousands of products at supermarkets. Scientists are now questioning their effect over time on the gut bacteria, even though food safety agencies have approved them as safe for chemical and toxicity. Some additives, according to researchers, may disrupt the balance of bacteria in the gut. Studies show that emulsifiers can weaken mucus layers which separate bacteria and the intestinal wall.
