Tuesday saw the introduction of unilateral orders by President Biden to restrict asylum claims at the southern border; but, as the plan comes to light, it appears that there are large exclusions in the barrier that opponents claim you can “drive a truck through.”
In a speech on Tuesday afternoon, Biden declared, “Today, I’m moving past Republican obstruction and using executive authorities available to me as president to do what I can on my own to address the border.”
According to officials, the presidential proclamation will temporarily halt immigration across the southern border after the average daily encounter rate surpasses 2,500 over a period of seven days.
BIDEN BORDER ORDER TAKES HEAT FROM DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS: “IT IS INSULTING”
That will remain in place for 14 days, following a seven-day period during which less than 1,500 interactions occurred along the border. It comes with an interim final rule from the Justice and Homeland Security departments. Furthermore, that rule will set a higher standard for refugees’ initial asylum screenings. Republicans and Democrats alike criticized the action, and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) threatened to sue.
