Your body is already great at cleaning itself. From your liver and kidneys to your lungs and digestive system, it works around the clock to remove waste and toxins. While detox diets and juice cleanses get a lot of attention, experts say the best way to support your body is through simple, everyday habits.

Here’s what you can do to help your body detox naturally.

Eat More Fibre

Most people don’t get enough fibre, even though it’s essential for digestion, immunity, and overall health. Fibre helps your body in a few key ways:

  • Supports digestion: It keeps your stools soft and helps waste move through your intestines faster.
  • Binds toxins: Certain fibres can attach to metals like lead or arsenic, helping your body get rid of them.
  • Protects organs: Fibre feeds healthy gut bacteria and supports your liver and kidneys, which are vital for filtering waste.

Good sources include leafy greens, beans, lentils, chickpeas, whole grains, fruits, nuts, seeds, and even popcorn. Eating a variety of fibre-rich foods is the best approach.

Drink Plenty of Water

Water is crucial for your kidneys and liver to flush out waste. Even mild dehydration can slow these processes.

You don’t need to force eight glasses a day—around 1.5 to 1.8 litres (six to seven glasses) is usually enough. Water, tea, coffee, and low-fat milk all count toward this total. Staying hydrated keeps your body running smoothly and can even lower the risk of kidney problems.

Look After Your Lungs

Your lungs naturally clean themselves, but exposure to smoke and indoor pollutants can make it harder.

  • Avoid smoke: Quit smoking or vaping, and steer clear of secondhand smoke.
  • Keep indoor air clean: Limit candles, fireplaces, and strong cleaning chemicals. Vacuum with a HEPA filter to reduce dust and allergens.
  • Exercise your lungs: Cardio workouts strengthen breathing muscles and reduce inflammation. Playing a wind instrument can help too.

Be wary of quick-fix “lung detox” products—they rarely work and can be unsafe.

Prioritize Sleep

Sleep is when your brain gets a deep clean. During deep sleep, cerebrospinal fluid flows around your brain cells, washing away proteins and other waste that build up during the day.

Without enough sleep, this process slows down, affecting memory, focus, and decision-making. Most adults need around seven hours a night, though individual needs vary.

Tips for better brain detox during sleep:

  • Stick to a regular sleep schedule.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Limit alcohol and screen time before bed.

Move Your Body

Exercise not only keeps you fit—it helps your liver and kidneys filter waste more efficiently. It also reduces fat in the liver, making detox processes easier.

You don’t need a fancy gym routine. Brisk walking, cycling, swimming, resistance training, or even gardening can make a real difference.

Focus on Long-Term Habits

Short-term detox diets might feel good temporarily, but lasting benefits come from habits you can maintain.

  • Eat a balanced diet, like the Mediterranean diet.
  • Drink alcohol in moderation year-round.
  • Stay hydrated, sleep well, and move every day.

Experts stress that supporting your body’s natural detox system is about consistent habits, not quick fixes. Over time, these simple choices help your organs work efficiently, boost brain function, and keep you feeling your best.
