Today, at the ILO office in Islamabad, the Employers’ Federation of Pakistan (EFP) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) held a high-level consultation with media leaders as part of the BRIDGE project. The main topic of discussion at the event was how important it is for the media to expose forced labor and advance ethical hiring procedures in Pakistan.
During the event, Geir T. Tonstol, Country Director of the International Labour Organization (ILO), stressed that Pakistan must immediately enhance the working conditions of textile industry workers in order to maintain its Generalized Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+) status with the European Union. He stated, “It is essential to improve working conditions in this sector to maintain our GSP+ status, as Pakistan’s economy is heavily dependent on textile exports,” emphasizing the significance of adhering to 27 international standards relating to to labour, human rights, and environmental protection.
